Chris Bell (assemblages using recycled materials – mostly plastics), Mark Orbell and Maureen Connett (both painters).

Maureen Connett trained as a painter in St Albans with Maurice Feild, a long-serving tutor at the Slade School and a member of the Euston Road Group. She was Senior Researcher at St John’s College, Oxford, where she worked on the sketchbooks of Robert Bevan, a fine painter of the Sussex landscape

The publication of her research in Apollo and other specialist journals eventually resulted in her book: Walter Sickert and the Camden Town Group (David & Charles, 1992) and to a change of career from teaching to journalism. She is Honorary Research Fellow at the Slade School, University College London.

Maureen’s subjects are the natural world and the built environment: historic Hastings buildings and landscapes such as the Brassey Institute, the pier, East and West Hill, Alexandra Park, All Saints’ Church and the Old Town. She paints in watercolour, oils and acrylics and considers her work to be both personal and within the great tradition of landscape painting. She has held solo exhibitions in St Albans, Oxford and London and her work is in private collections in this country, Europe and Australia. She moved to Hastings where she is currently Artist in Residence at the newly restored Burtons’ St Leonards Gardens.

Maureen is also a noted jazz singer. Ask her at the Private view.

Mark Orbell sees the  World through his art, painting, which he thinks is the purest form of expression. ” The magic of the two-dimensional image that transcends its own reality for me is magic, and to use base elements to conjure up something of beauty is alchemy. I believe I still have a lot more to say about the world as I see it from the studio.”
