Sid Beynon 2nd August 1956 – 25th August 2010
He was riding a bicycle along Hastings seafront when the word, “Paul”, picked out in brown pebbles on the beach caught his attention; from that moment his imagination was fired. He began to experiment with his own designs with stones on the beach and a natural, artistic talent emerged. In his untutored hands the sea-smoothed pebbles, grey/blue, brown, red, white, and black, were formed into temporary pictures of sea creatures, wild animals, historical and legendary characters and mystical symbols. As he worked he was oblivious to the fact that he was being watched as a figure of some interest. Local resident Rosemary Chennery, who dabbles in art, suggested he should apply for an Arts Foundation Course.
Sid was accepted at Hastings College of Arts and Technology and he began the Foundation Course in August 1998. Here he nervously began to draw for the first time, inspired as Sid says, ” by great tutors”. During this period Sid continued to produce beach art, by then in the company of two friends, Jamie Stapely and Paul Garrett. His work became more complex and he built up a repertoire of designs, gaining a reputation as a beach entertainer. Crowds gathered to watch his work take shape, children joined him to imitate his creations and some onlookers threw down coins in appreciation. Along with his growing interest in beach art Sid began to develop a new personal philosophy. The timeless quality of the beach has influenced him and as he speaks about his creative environment you can sense that for him it is a living entity. With time the difficulties of his earlier life fell into perspective; tolerance and calm now pervaded his thinking.
One of his most treasured possessions is a scruffy exercise book, which he hangs on the promenade railings so that his audience can write comments on his work. It is filled with warm praise for his pictures from local people and visitors from all over the world. Sid has struck up a special rapport with Hastings’ young skateboarders and BMX riders, who use the cycle track on the promenade and he often makes a pebble re-creation of the logo of their favourite seafront supply shop, “Backyard”. Asked how he feels about the vandals who occasionally demolish his work he says that he thinks it is better that they vent their frustration on beach stones rather than on people or valuable possessions. In 1999, Sid was accepted as a student at the University of Wales Institute, Cardiff, and completed a three-year course for a BA Honours in Fine Art.
He is now working with other materials and the natural talent he uses with pebbles is being expanded in other fields. Sid’s increasing understanding of artistic styles has influenced him considerably and one of his favourite artists is Marcel Duchamp because of his use of diverse creative materials. The value of his work is becoming recognised, particularly as a route into design for would-be artists of all ages, but especially for children. He has already participated several times as an outdoor artist in the Rother Community Summertime Arts programme. His enthusiasm and modest approach to his work make him the perfect tutor for children or students who lack artistic experience. Sid Beynon and Jamie Stapely are considering asking Hastings Borough Council for permission to create by the lifeboat house a permanent pebble mosaic of the RNLI flag, which will be visible from the summit of Hastings Castle cliffs. We hope HBC will be wise enough to take up this generous offer, which will also serve as a fitting symbol of Hastings’ reputation for nurturing new artistic talent.’
This profile was written by Victoria Seymour some time back. It is timeless.

So sorry to hear about Sid

Sally and I are absolutely heart broken to hear of Sid’s death.
What a wonderful, talented and generous man. Just last week Sally was telling friend’s how brilliant Sid was in helping her and Jago with their NZ exhibition.
And you, Harry, must be deeply saddened by the loss of such a good friend.
We will certainly be there Friday evening to raise a toast to Sid!
With love,
John and Sally

Dear Harry and all at Hastings Arts Forum
I’m so sad to hear the news that Sid died on Wednesday. I only met him briefly for the set up of our recent exhibition, but even a brief encounter showed his obvious skill and sensitivity with art work. Kate of course knew Sid better and she will be in touch with you separately.
You must all be devastated.

What devastating news!!
I thought he looked a bit frail last time I saw him, and I remember him telling me a while back that his dad had died very young. But, what I don’t know is whether he knew what was coming…
You say it is his wish that his exhibition go ahead etc, so I’m guessing he did know what was going on.
Having only recently moved to Hastings, I still don’t know that many people; but Sid was one of the first people I met, and I liked him immediately. He then made a great job of hanging my exhibition.
I loved the way he seemed to say it straight and tell me what he really felt about things-most of which I agreed with!
They say that only the good die young; well I’ve known a few good people who’ve made it to old age, but it always seems at a time like this that a disproportionate amount of young people do die young.
I’m very sad.
Kris Allan.

This is very sad news.
I have known Sid since I was 16 – he was part of a large group of rather wayward teenagers!
I reconnected with him again many years later when he was a student on the foundation course at Hastings College.
A generous, quietly humble and thoughtful soul – he hadn’t really changed in this respect over all those years but had in this time found a place for his nature in making art. Art as a kind of home. I think this is why he was able to give so much to HAF as well as continue his practice. His love of nature was great and we would sometimes just share a couple of words/texts in recognition of a beautiful, late afternoon, paynes grey sky or a particular quality of light. He really lived this way – taking great joy from the simple but significant pleasure of the moment.
His nature and way of living contained much poetry and this great sensitivity will be missed by many.

So very sorry to hear about Sid. I shall not forget meeting him for the first time when I arrived here in 2001 when he was creating marvellous patterns in pebbles on the beach. He was apparently unconcerned with the ephemeral nature of the works of art he was creating.

I was so sad to hear of Sid’s death. Only earlier this year we passed a pleasant afternoon hanging an exhibition – From This Point On. Sid showed me the proper way to hang frames, twisting the excess wire and covering with masking tape and all the rest. I think he looked after me a bit because he could see I was new to art. Later he asked my opinion on how it all looked and even used my suggestion.
Thanks Sid for including me and being ready to pass on your valuable knowledge.

He was a beach philosopher and artist (Turner trod this stage as we know profoundly – but so did Sid ). Sid goes along with bucket and spades, sandcastles, Punch’nJudy — that sort of MAGICAL EYE-OPENER which starts children thinking the World is complex and wonderful. I think all of us, and the beach itself, were glad to have known Sid.
