“Wanted!! Creative artists !!” Oil empowers the world. What message can artists give which will bring awareness of the inevitable damage and destruction, which unfettered use of oil will bring to planet Earth. “Conscious Oil” is an exhibition which stimulates thought and offers a wide range of opportunities to engage in discussion with others. See the “Whats on” section of our website. The facilitators of this exhibition do not expect a ‘banner-waving’ response, but they do wish to see creative ideas emerge.
A group discussion on Sunday, 22 May followed a presentation on the life experiences of two families, as affected by oil across the generations . Following on, those attending were invited to give their reaction to an object on display. The positive and the negative aspects of our oil-based economies figured in the discussions.
The ability of mankind to adapt to circumstances was recognised but it was against the background of a ‘ticking clock’ with a possible doom scenario within 50 years, unless we change our ways. One spur to a change on our oil dependency is the price of oil – currently around $100 a barrel from an ultimately finite resource.
The increasing wealth of the developing world will lead to an increasing demand for oil, as populations with matching disposable incomes aspire to the trappings of the car-owning western economies.
Can artists find a means of getting the message across, with suggestions for the life-style changes we will have to address sooner rather than later?

This is a carefully prepared exhibition and the questions seep through later after you have left – a very worthwhile exhibition.
I have a profound belief in the ingenuity of man to cope with problems – “Necessity is the mother of invention” – and I believe that we will succeed, just as we did with coal fires and acid rain in the post World War 2 environment. However, the clock is ticking on this one.
Thanks Emily and Anne – great show.

Great Show Emily. Highlights the dangers of oil dependency, if we do nothing. However, man found a way to deal with coal, acid rain and smog in the 1950s – why not with oil and carbon pollution?
Oil has been around for thousands of years, so why is it that the problem arises now? Well, with China’s 1.5 billion and IOndia’s 1.1 billion population wanting to live the Western life-style, we will soon find out
