‘In all chaos there is a cosmos, in all disorder a secret order’ Carl Jung

Chaos is by its very definition, an inversion of ‘Order’ and the ‘Known’. The abstract presence of chaos is constantly juxtaposed with human reality and our experience of the world around us. ‘Chaos is a Friend of Mine’ is a visceral interpretation of this inherently enigmatic form.

Contributing artists have been invited to explore this theme from both an intrapersonal and a metaphysical perspective. This has produced an exhibition of vibrant and dynamic work in a variety of media.

Some of the artworks recognise and demonstrate that, for the creative process to take place, a certain amount of chaos must be tolerated and even encouraged. We witness anarchic brush strokes which mimic a sense of delirious reality alongside knotted shapes which belie the futility of existence. Other works interrogate the relationship between the conscious and the unconscious mind where the possibility of integration or disintegration hangs in the balance.

‘Chaos is a Friend of Mine’ explores the constant states of renewal and destruction which lie deep within ourselves and our environment, and which at certain moments in time can make us question the very sense of our being and existence.
