Cathryn Kemp, Lament Song

Cathryn is an award-winning painter, based in Sussex. She completed her Masters Degree in Fine Art at Winchester School of Art’s prestigious Barcelona studios and won a London Arts Board award for her body of work completed at the Moscow Institute of Architecture and Art.

She has exhibited in Moscow, Barcelona, Belgium, London and the South East and is represented by Saffron Gallery in Battle, East Sussex. She is exhibiting in the Brighton Art Fair and her first solo show takes place at the Hastings Art Forum, 16-30 September.

Artist Statement.

Cathryn’s paintings are delicate, fragile but imposing abstract works, mainly on canvas and paper. She describes her process as creating ‘emotional landscapes’ and likens her work to Emin’s and Kahlo’s despite being entirely abstract in form and composition. The works from the ‘White Paintings; Lament series’ were made throughout the breakdown of her relationship and she is unapologetic that they became a way of working through the intense nature of the emotional dramas unfolding in her life.

Using the relationships between mark-making, colour and form, Cathryn revels in the physical properties of paint, glazes, pencil, charcoal, emulsion, acrylic, watercolour and even tile grouting to evoke a sense of emotional drama and space in solid, physical form.

Education.

Catherine studied at Central St Martins School of Art in London and went on after her BA (Hons) Fine Art to do her MA Fine Art at Winchester School of Art’s Barcelona studios.
