Whither the Forum? AF1 Sunday, 25 Jul at 5 pm

Sid Beynon will chair a group discussion on “what sort of Forum “ do we, the members, want. This is a continuation of the discussion we had at the Forum’s AGM and was warmly received by those attending as a constructive discussion.

There are many options open to us ranging from being a Sunday afternoon painting club through to a hub of excellence in the South East. Everyone is eligible to exhibit in the Forum’s two galleries through the medium of Members’ shows and similar. Also the Forum gives a platform to group shows, such as the current Zoom show in AF2, which is a group of nine painters from Sussex Coast College. Some are exhibiting for the first time and this gives a certain amount of confidence to new exhibitors.

In AF2, there is a solo show from an artist who has exhibited many times before. Next week there will be a solo exhibition from a Spanish artist and also a photographic exploration of a theme (urban redevelopment). These solo shows are the result of the Arts Committee believing there is merit in the solo shows – but this leads us on to the concept of “selection”, which is not welcomed by all members. This is something which should be thrashed out by members, as it will affect the future profile of the Forum. It follows that if there is an element of selection, we should get a consensus of what factors should be included. It is to be hoped that  the four shows over the next few weeks will be somewhat inspirational and give food for thought, ie, educational, Maybe you find this attitude patronising or even better,  you may have other ideas that ought to be considered.  Lets hear from you !!

“I aim to create unusual, vivid and celebratory work in paint and mixed media.

The work can be completely abstract, semi-abstract, representational or figurative and may contain surreal or mystical elements. Recent work has focussed on landscapes, which draw one in with their detail and unexpected features, with a theme of a spiritual quest or journeying…. (more…)

Dorothea Huntrods and Wendy Oxlade in AF2, 30 June – 14 July

Wendy and Dorothea have both been working on new paintings for this show.

ARTIST STATEMENT – Dorothea Huntrods.

As a young student, I started painting in the traditional way using oils on canvas and board – an exercise I still enjoy immensely. I like the immediacy of painting, the mixing and layering of colour, texture on texture. I’m very much a colour person, and am strongly aware of their enegies and vibrations – of the effect of one colo9ur has on another – so that the slightest change may dramatically affect the sense of place and atmosphere. My last one woman show at Arts Forum 1 in 2007 mainly focused on mixed media collages inspired during life modelling classes with Rod Harman at Hastings College.  In this exhibition there was also a small series of pastels inspired by foreign landscapes. This year’s exhibition is a continuation of that later journey. (more…)

Max Irwin in AF1, 23 – 30 June

Driven by patterns in physical phenomena and mathematics that conceive the natural world, Max produces optical candy that stimulates and attracts the relationship between chaos and reality.

An international artist, previously only known in small circles for his grand commission murals, he is branching out into the public view with a kinetic mix of multidimensional bright acrylics and wiremesh, reality remixing, and highgain displays of conceptual infinity.
