Telling Stories receives a £10,000 grant from ACE

Hastings artist, and Forum member, Cathryn Kemp has received a grant of £10,000 from ACE, (Arts Council England), for Telling Stories – the exhibition she’s organised and curated. This will allow the show to expand to include seven Hastings and seven Margate artists who together will spearhead the Coastal Currents festival 2012.

Telling Stories: Margate; Private View 7 – 9pm Friday 7th October

It all kicks off with a live performance by Hastings dance artist Yumino Seki.

Kim Forward unveils the plaque on Saturday, 1 October at 11:45The Sid Beynon mosaic and accompanying plaque, a memorial to this long time forum member and volunteer who died in August last year, will be unveiled by Kim Forward, Mayor of Hastings on Saturday, 1 October at 11:45. The mosaic was created created for the Forum by Mike Williams, Juliette Dodd and Sid’s long time colleague, Jamie Stapely.

Local artist and Hastings Arts Forum member, Jeff Stancliffe has a retrospective of his colourful figurative paintings in the Dragon Bar, 71 George Street Hastings.

Private view: Friday 23rd September from 7:30 with a DJ set by the Spin Doctor.


 

The Sid Beynon memorial mosaic

Hastings’ legendary beach artist Sid Beynon will be remembered with a specially designed mosaic which is due to be unveiled on Saturday, October 1. Sid, who died in 2010, worked on the shoreline of the coast he cherished using the pebbles and stones he found there, calling it ‘his studio’. The mosaic, which was designed by Juliette Dodd, with the help of Mike Williams and Jamie Stapley is in the shape of a dolphin, which was one of Sid’s most iconic beach designs. (more…)

“In Memoriam” – A collaboration in textiles & sound

Forum members Cathryn Kemp and Nick Weekes respond to the atmospheric space at St Mary-In-The-Castle Crypt, culminating in their Private View on Saturday, August 6, 2011.

Cathryn who works creating textile-based installations, and Nick, alias Ted Versicolor, who works with sound, are seeking to engage with the unique space, looking into the history and sadness of the burial site. (more…)


 

Deck Chair Prize Winner

Congratulations to Denise who has been notified that she is one of 20 winners selected from over 1,000 entries to receive a prize for the design of a textile to cover a deck chair. The competition was organised by Hastings Museum together with Hastings Borough Council.

There will be an exhibition of the winning entries at Sussex Coast College in September.


 

Sonic Performance

Long-serving Arts Forum member, Nick Weekes, will perform sound pieces at the opening of the latest show at The Stade, Hastings Old Town.

His sonic collaboration with veteran avant-garde Jazz musician Geoff Leigh is a curated response to the photographic show ‘In Between’ which features the work of twin brothers Phillip and Anthony Reed. (more…)

Cathryn Kemp is artist in residence at The Crypt, St Mary-in-the-Castle

Arts Forum member, Cathryn Kemp will be artist-in-residence at St Mary In The Castle Crypt for July.
She will be working with textiles and sound within the intense atmosphere of the crypt, which houses a member of the Austen family.

Cathryn said: ‘I am delighted to be working in St Mary’s, I feel my work which deals with rites of passage and emotional geneology, will make an interesting collaboration with the space.’

Be Artist in Residence at St Mary in the Castle

St Mary In The CastleArtist in residence with studio space in July

The crypt, (the gallery of St Mary in the Castle) has no bookings for July. Applications are invited from anyone interested in setting up as artist in residence there. The successful artist would be asked to be there during cafe opening hours and perhaps on Saturday afternoons to do demonstrations.

The Crypt would charge a percentage for any work sold, but the studio space would be free of charge.
