Zoom. (the painters’ section of Zoom) in AF2, 14 – 28 Jul. There are nine painters from the Zoom group, who are exhibiting in AF2. All are, or recently were, students .

Zoom is a local collective of artists, photographers and sculptors based in Hastings.  The members exhibiting here are all painters, have a strong visual response to the world around them and a probably irrational urge to share it with others.

Most of the painters of Zoom have come together here at Hastings Arts Forum to produce a distinctively diverse collection of artwork.  Our choice of media are just as varied, ranging from pencil through acrylic, oil, pastel, batik, mixed media collages, woodblocks and etchings.  Some of us approach the subject by painting and drawing what we see and others wait and see where the creative process takes them.

Members taking part in this exhibition are:

Louise Etgart

Sandra Everley

Marie Ford

Denise Griffiths

Lydia Holtom

Ben Passmore

Kim Sherress

Hayley Small

Barbara Williams

All participating members are up and coming artists with a connection to Hastings College.  Ben Passmore has graduated with a Fine Art degree this year. Lydia Holtom, Kim Sherress, Sandra Everley and Marie Ford are all Fine Art degree students.  Louise Etgart has completed her Foundation Course and is beginning her Fine Art degree. Hayley Small also completed a Foundation Course and Barbara Williams and Denise Griffiths are continuing their studies in Fine Art at Hastings College as part-time students.

Sun, 18 Jul -  ‘Erasing David’ (12A) UK 2010 + Q&A with director, David Bond and Phil Booth (NO2ID). Synopsis below.

Once the bastion of freedom and civil liberties, the UK is now one of the most advanced surveillance societies in the world – ranked third after Russia and China. The average UK adult is now registered on over 700 databases and is caught daily on one of the 4 million CCTV cameras located on nearly every street corner in the country. Increasingly monitored, citizens are being turned into suspects. But if you’ve got nothing to hide, surely there’s nothing to fear?

When David receives a letter informing him that his daughter is among 25 million residents whose details have been lost by the government’s Child Benefit Office, he begins a journey that will see him hounded across Europe.

David soon discovers some alarming truths about what the government and private companies already know about ordinary citizens. He meets people who have been caught in the crossfire of the database state and have had their lives shattered.

’As his concern grows, he makes a life-changing decision. He will leave his pregnant wife and child behind and put himself under surveillance for thirty days. The UK’s top Private Investigators are hired to discover everything they can about him and his family – and track David down as heverything they can about him and his family – and track David down as he attempts to vanish. Is it still possible to live a private, anonymous life in the UK? everything they can about him and his family – and track David down as he attempts to vanish. 8. Statement for the future – New Chairman.

Discussion during the counting of votes.

We ask members to give some thought as to what  sort of Forum they want and contribute to the debate on “Statement for the Future”.

So far the committee has adopted an inclusive approach giving opportunities to all levels of expertise to exhibit. Exhibitions such as Members’ shows, Jack-in-the-green  and Volunteers’ shows allow all members to show their skill. Those who can show a degree of excellence to our arts committee can exhibit through the medium of their own exhibition.

The Forum is a not-for-profit body, but it has a responsibility to remain solvent and commercially aware. A policy of hosting successful exhibitions gives the Forum the ability to host exhibitions that may not  be profitable but  educational – and thereby raising the level of art excellence, innovation  and art appreciation among members as well as reaching out to the wider community.

One such suggestion for the future by Annie Rae, is to have a show curated by a print specialist covering all the various forms of print-making and using the undoubted skills of our many members – many with an international reputation in this art form.  Taking the idea of  a printmakers’ show further,  there may be other areas such as photography, where we have a wide skill base, which will be highlighted as we host various parts of the International Photographic Festival at Brighton in October and November. Here is a challenge for the photographers to exchange ideas and push forward the boundaries.

Members may see other areas for this approach – glassmakers, sculptors, ceramicists ??

***JERWOOD BURSARIES. Three selected artists will each receive a bursary of £10,000 and a six-month period of critical and professional development support from mentors prior to a touring exhibition of the UK in 2011. See advertisement below. Apply before 24 September. Hastings has talent!!! —- plenty of talent!!!.

Sun, 04 Jul –   ’Beyond The Pole’ (15) UK 2010 + Q&A with director, David   L. Williams via Skype.

BEYOND THE POLE is Touching the Void with laughs, and Withnail and I on ice.  Funny and subversive it’s the story of two men trying to find their place in the world before the end of the world.  And it asks one question of us all: how far would you go to save the planet?

SYNOPSIS
Brian (Rhys Thomas) and Mark (Stephen Mangan) are setting out on the first Carbon Neutral, Vegetarian, and Organic expedition ever to attempt the North Pole.  As a world first they have high hopes of getting into the Guinness Book of Records and, if all goes well, of saving the planet from Global Warming.

Unfortunately they have never done anything like this before. And they hadn’t reckoned on the polar bears, the cocky gay Norwegians, or on Mark’s rapidly loosening grip on reality.

No one said saving the planet was easy, but does it have to be this hard?

AGENDA – AGM Tuesday, July 13th 2010

1.Welcome
2.Apologies
3.Minutes of Last AGM
4.Report on becoming a Charity -
5.Committee’s Accounts – Alice Maylam, Treasurer and motion to approve the   accounts.
6.Committee’s  Report – Harry Lyons, Chairman
7.Elections – Chaired by an independent Chair.
• Introduction of Nominees
• Voting and counting of Votes
• Announcement of elected committee

Showing Now…

Max Lovenheim Irwin in AF1, 23 – 30 Jun.

It is always interesting to see the work of artists who try to extend the boundaries of their chosen discipline. When first asked to explain his work, Max referred to “mathematics” and “patterns”, but as  conversation developed it was apparent that he was exploring new forms. Max has a busy professional life in Computers, but finds relaxation in his art.

Max says : “My art is like looking at nature through a different set of eyes and being able to see the World in a different state.  Imagine looking at a piece of moss on a rock and then imagine the view of a forest seen through an aeroplane window and compare both images.” – or using an example from his exhibition “Look at a shell on the beach and then compare it with the Milky Way.”

Max’s work is largely acrylics with some images in mixed media. He will also be showing a video throughout  Saturday 26  and Sunday 27 June and at 2 pm on Sunday he will give a gallery talk explaining his work.

Coming up…

Selina  di Girolamo. “Drawing down the Moon”.  AF1 30 Jun – 7 Jul.
Dorothea Huntrods and Wendy Oxlade in AF2. 30 Jun – 14 Jul .PV  2 July.
Wendy and Dorothea have both been working on new paintings for this show.

Artist Statement – Dorothea Huntrods

As a young art student, I started painting in the traditional way using oils on canvas and board – an exercise I still enjoy immensely. I like the immediacy of painting, the mixing and layering of colour, texture on texture. I’m very much a colour person, and am strongly aware of their energies and vibrations – of the effect of one colour has on another – so that the slightest change may dramatically affect the sense of place and atmosphere.

After recently experimenting with collagraphy where I chose to use smallish, A4 size plates, ~I am now exploring painting again but on a larger  scale. I’m using acrylics, collage and other mixed media on heavy watercolour paper. The paper itself produces wonderful textures. Working from light to dark, I may apply several layers of colour and sometimes collage (paper, fabric etc) to give the painting greater depth of form and colour.

The two subjects which inspire me a lot are landscape and figurative and may be drawn completely from imagination and memory.

Artist Statement – Wendy Oxlade

My first creative work, aged six, was a poem about flowers playing in the spring sunshine, reflecting an aspect of my childhood, playing with my cousins in our garden, as a  kind of utopia. Some of my new painting/ drawings reflect the same sheer delight with the world, as “all that jazz”,and”musical riff”………
By contrast a visit to north Wales last year has funded some landscapes/abstracts  preoccupied with the slate quarries of Blanaeu Ffestiniog and the notion of beauty in ugliness or the transfoming powers of art.Continuing this quest, two paintings one of a figure, the other a portrait of K, use the genre of stained glass, its  pure colour and composition to create “modern icons”, with homage to the south west trancept of Canterbury Cathedral.

My influences are far and wide, and as a graduate of Camberwell Art School, the Auerbach/Bomberg lineage versus Uglow/ Coldsteam/Sickert lineage created the lively dialogue and debate that inspires art students to develope their own expression.

This show is not to be missed, with my fellow artist Dorothea Huntrods creating the other half of the artistic debate.

Alice Pickering in AF1,  7 – 14 Jul. PV 9 July.

“I aim to create unusual, vivid and celebratory work in paint and mixed media.
The work can be completely abstract, semi-abstract, representational or figurative and may contain surreal or mystical elements. Recent work has focussed on landscapes, which draw one in with their detail and unexpected features, with a theme of a spiritual quest or journeying….

…. I use paint in conjunction with a variety of partly recycled media, creating my own new images from an amalgam of
sections from paintings that I decide to recycle, scraps of fabric, small pieces of photographs I have taken, natural objects, and cuttings from printed images. (And the odd sequin or splash of glitter can find its way in!) “
Bob Farquhar, “Pros and Cons”  (Prison Art) in AF1 14 – 28 Jul.
Bob has spent some 32 years in prison, where he learnt to paint with Christine Berg, a former pupil of Kokoschka. During his ‘time’ Bob managed to stay ‘on the run’ for two years and was looked after by the King’s Cross girls. Bob is now living in Hastings.
The Mayor of Hastings has kindly agreed to open Bob’s exhibition at the Private view on Friday, 16 July. The Koestler Trust has given a generous donation to the staging of this exhibition

Max Irwin in AF1, 23 – 30 Jun.

Sue Jones in AF2. 23 – 30 Jun.

Artist Statement. My last one woman show at Arts Forum 1 in 2007 mainly focused on mixed media collages inspired during life modelling classes with Rod Harman at Hastings College.   In this exhibition there was also a small series of pastels inspired by foreign landscapes. This year’s exhibition is a continuation of that later journey.

Vibrant colour, contrast, shape, atmosphere and pre-conscious images play an important part in my work and hopefully combined with imagination the whole is more than the sum of the parts. The feelings of sensual serenity created in me by these once imagined landscapes is also influenced by an awareness of the history, struggles and labours of the local people.

Escaping to the peace of natural spaces has consistently provided me with sanctuary from stress, especially when I was working in London as a community worker. So when I became ill I instinctively knew what would be healing for me, even though the journey itself is challenging.

To spend time in places which at one time I could only dream of evokes visions from the realm of fantasies revisited. It replenishes my depleted spirits. The stimulus of change is thrilling, uplifting and life affirming.

These works are a visual journal of my travels.

There’s an hour each morning for 6-7yrs and for 8-9yrs in groups of between 12 and 15 children, and the sessions are designed imaginatively to encourage children to be creative and playful with music.

In September ongoing classes begin which will running throughout the year in term-time for the same age children, every Wednesday after school.

And there are introductory workshops on two Wednesdays mornings, August 11th and September 1st

The courses are led by Nancy Cooley, local musician, an experienced classical performer, choir and workshop-leader and teacher.

Stop Press…

AGM to go ahead in July. The Azur has been booked for our postponed AGM on Tuesday, 13 July at 6.30 for 7 p.m. We are confirming with nominees their intention of standing for election to the committee. The list of nominations for the committee and the agenda will be published in next week’s Bulletin.

Visit of the Mayor. The Forum was honoured with a visit by the newly elected Mayor, Councillor Kim Forward, on Wednesday 9 June. She saw the two current exhibitions —  Katherine Reekie in AF1, and AF2 with Elaine Short  and Robin Muckle. The Mayor also met several members who were handing in work for the Members Show.

The Mayor saw the Forum at its busiest and arguably at its best, as it worked under the pressure of resolving three separate exhibitions. In addition she saw an early glimpse of an exhibition in preparation, entitled “Pros and Cons” (featuring prisoners and prostitutes), which was co-incidentally being filmed for PR purposes.

Art on the Beach. We would like to draw members’ attention to a letter in last Friday’s Hastings Observer (4 June ) by a reader praising Katherine Reekie’s show “Art on the Beach” and contrasting the positive slant of her exhibition with the furore over the Jerwood application to build on the Stade.

The nub of the letter is in the last paragraphs as follows.

“ ……It’s a clear statement to Hastings. It says, ‘You haven’t really been thinking about 20th  century art. You have just been having a planning argument (about the Jerwood). Here’s how to start thinking about whether you want some of  it and if so, what you want.’

I think Katherine should get a big thank you (better still a grant) from Hastings planners, movers and shakers, for raising the level of the discussion about modern art in Hastings.

AGM to go ahead in July.

Southern Water has formally dropped its claim against the Forum for £4000 in respect of  a disputed water bill for the year 2008 / 2009 and is not claiming costs in response to our appeal to have the County Court judgment against us set aside. This clears the way for the AGM to go ahead and we are now considering a date between 6 – 12 July. One other possible issue still remains from the year 2008, and this concerns a PAYE issue, but we are optimistic this need not delay the AGM further.

Polly Gifford posts     seven sisters group site specific workshop at the De La Warr Pavilion

26th June 2010

10.30am to 5.30pm Free

seven sisters group have been commissioned by the Creative Campus Initiative (CCI) to create a new piece based on the Greek myth of the runner Atalanta and the origins of the Olympic games. seven sisters group’s Atalanta will combine a downloadable podcast walk with elements of live performance, and will take place at the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford in July.

As part of the CCI commission seven sisters group is offering a one day professional development workshop for local artists and sports people.  Each workshop is led by artistic directors Susanne Thomas and Sophie Jump and suitable for up to 14 participants with an interest in site-specific work. It is open to participants from dance, theatre, design, architecture, sound, light, or art backgrounds and aims to be a professional lab opportunity for students, young graduates and professional artists of all ages. Participants will be encouraged to create site-specific performance in various locations within the De La Warr Pavilion in response to spatial, social and cultural issues.

In addition we would like to invite 3 athletes from both Olympic and Para Olympic backgrounds (or with Olympic ambition) to participate, to interview and to engender discussion and enable research which will inform the project.

About seven sisters group

An experimental, cross-disciplinary approach to performance over the last 15 years has enabled seven sisters group to establish a unique position as one of UK’s leading site-specific performance companies. The group’s works have been presented in both indoor and outdoor sites in the UK and across Europe, with venues ranging from theatres and galleries, libraries and railway stations to the Royal Opera House and the Royal National Theatre. For more information about the company see www.sevensistersgroup.com

About Creative Campus Initiative

The Creative Campus Initiative is a once in a lifetime opportunity to create an unprecedented level of cultural collaboration between Universities in the UK. In support of the Cultural Olympiad, it is based on the values of exploration, research, learning and progression. The 13 universities which make up the CCI consortium share a common belief that Higher Education can play a unique role in raising the aspirations and skills of young people through creative innovation inspired by the Olympic and Paralympic Games. http://www.creativecampusinitiative.org.uk/

How to apply

Although the workshop is free places are limited, so interested applicants are asked to send a resume and a statement of interest to admin@sevensistersgroup.com, by the 19th June.

 Do you have the Patience…?

The De La Warr Pavilion’s summer exhibition this year will be presenting the work of Japanese artist Tomoko Takahashi.

Takahashi is known internationally for her engaging installations and also for staging live events as part of her work.  We will be re-creating one of these as part of the exhibition, and we’re going to need some help.

Hours of Patience

This is a one day event for all ages, inviting people to play the card game Patience with actual playing cards (not on the computer!).

Normally it’s a lonely activity, but for this occasion it’s turned into a social event.  The foyer at the De La Warr Pavilion will be transformed into a Patience playroom for the day, accompanied by an instruction booklet containing over 30 games.

We’re looking for volunteers to become Patience Instructors, to encourage and help people on the day to learn how to play the games.  Traditionally the game of Patience was handed down through generations, person to person, via families and friends.  Instructors carry a very important role – bringing back this oral tradition.

There will be a training session on Monday 7 June, 5-7pm, at the De La Warr Pavilion for those interested in getting involved.   The event takes place on Sunday 11 July, 10am – 6pm.  Instructors will be asked to do two 2-hour shifts.

The training and the event will be hosted by Tomoko Takahashi and her collaborator Ella Gibbs.

You will need to enjoy communicating with people about the games, and be free for both the training session and the day itself.

If you’re interested in getting involved please RSVP to me at polly.gifford@dlwp.com or 01424 229133.

Artist Satement – Robin Muckle

After spending my working life in the field of IT, I retired early and decided to pursue my fascination with art.

My interest is predominantly in three-dimensional work, experimenting with different media – mainly clay, plaster and sometimes stone.

The work is mainly figurative, often attempting to blend realism with expression. Inspiration comes from nature and the human form, as well as past and contemporary artists.

I enjoy the contrast between moulding and carving and the process through to the final finish which may be ‘raw’, one of a variety of cold or patinated finishes, or glazed using one of the many different techniques such as raku.

 Postponed AGM

The committee regrets to announce the postponement of the scheduled AGM. This is due to the receipt of  a judgment against us by Worthing County Court in respect of a claim by Southern Water relating to our licence to occupy 17, Marine Court (the former Baird TVF ) in 2008. We are contesting the judgment and we believe that our case is strong.

In view of the above, it was the unanimous decision of those present that we could not ask a new committee to take on the undefined risks associated with the judgment.

The delay will hopefully not be more than two months. We hope to address administrative procedures so that these circumstances can not be repeated.

Finally, we would take this opportunity to reassure members that Forum finances are in good shape and able to deal with any foreseen circumstances.

This show has received lots of compliments.. PAW has mentored six artists with learning difficulties and complex needs over 18 months. The six artists are John Croft, Albert Gere,Neville Jermyn, Michelle Roberts, Jonathan Rogers and Charlotte Stephens. The artists  have been given the opportunity to work intensively in an artist studio environment under the careful mentoring of Tony Colley. The results of this unique period of professional development are extraordinary and are displayed as six very distinct bodies of work. As an example of the care and detail of the mentoring, PAW has built a scale model of  both AF1 and 2 with scale models of the exhibits in their planned location s on the walls.

An illustrated catalogue of the exhibition has been produced and is on sale at £5.00.

Tutor Alex Brattell said “they have been an exceptional group to work with. It’s been a wonderful mixture of research laboratory and social club. This is a professional exhibition with great impact. It mainly features local subjects but has a definitely cosmopolitan feel to it thanks to the talents of the photographers and the wide range of influences and inspirations that has emerged during the course. Many of these projects will go on to be seen elsewhere in expanded form, notably at Hastings’ first photography festival this Autumn, so this is a chance to get a first look at work by artists we will be seeing much more of in the future”.

Elaine Short and Robin Muckle in AF2, 2 – 9 Jun.

Elaine Short – tapestry weaver. After previous experience with painting and hand-made jewellery, Elaine turned to weaving and taught herself traditional hand-loom techniques, producing woven wall-hangings and rugs. She has found that this medium offers virtually unlimited creative possibilities, combining colour, form, texture and three-dimensional effects. Her designs range from pictorial landscapes and seascapes to abstract and decorative patterns derived from nature. She has been particualarly inspired by the landscape and coastline of southern England, but believes that practically any subject or idea can be represented in woven art. Her materials consist of high-quality rug wool, linen and cotton warps, acrylic and other artificial and natural fibres, some of which are hand-dyed to produce colours not readily available from commercial sources. Her work has been shown in various group exhibitions, including the regional and national exhibitions of the Association of Weavers, Spinners & Dyers, at Avebury, Lacock, Devizes, Wells, Bath, Oxford, Kendall and York, and she has also has solo exhibitions in Bradford-on-Avon and Rye. She now lives and works in St Leonards, where her studio has a wide view of the sea from which she derives so much inspiration.

Rosetti – Siddall commemoration

150 years ago on May 23rd 1860 the Pre Raphaelite artists Dante Gabriel Rossetti married his lover and model Lizzie Siddal in St. Clements Church Hastings. Lizzie later became a fine artist and poet in her own right. Sadly just two years later she died. To commemorate the wedding there will be an exhibition by local artists in St Clements Church from 10.00am until 4.00pm daily from Sunday 23rd – Monday 31st May. Exhibiting artists include Ron Nicola, Jane Marriner, Mike Williams, Alan Wright, Simon Hookey, Bruce Williams and Beth Boorman. Exhibits include paintings, stained glass, photography and wood carving. Local children will also exhibit. The works of art already in the church will also be on display including the brasses (which are usually covered) and the Sanctuary Light given to commemorate the wedding. On the evening of Saturday May 22nd there will be a concert of song and prose inspired by the Pre Raphaelites given by Susannah Appleyard and members of the Hastings Arts Forum poetry group. On Sunday May 23rd there will be a sung evensong at 7.00pm to commemorate the anniversary itself. Sitters are also needed to look after the exhibition so we can keep it open all week. Contact Keith Leech on 01424 716576 or bogiekeef@tiscali.co.uk

***Members of the Arts Forum are invited to the private view on Saturday 22 May after the concert. The concert begins at 7 pm ***
