George Robertson in AF2 , 9 – 15 Sep. A Scot in Sussex.
Artist Statement. I was born in Shetland in 1953, and have been painting in my spare time since before I left school. Canvases, boards, wood panels, furniture – in fact, anything I could lay my hands on – I would paint.
After relocating to Edinburgh in 1969 to train as a chef, my paintings were exhibited in several Scottish galleries. In 1973 a chain of
chef, and to paint at home, until 1980. At this time, I was living in Tunbridge Wells and was given the opportunity to take up painting full time, working in the field of interior design and antique restoration.
Since moving to a more rural area near Bodiam, I have had the time and the inspirational environment to encourage me to concentrate once again on canvas painting, which gives me the opportunity to choose the subjects and styles I wish to explore. I paint mainly in oil on canvas or wood. My subjects are often taken from local East Sussex scenery, and can incorporate the more abstract elements to be found both in nature and everyday life.

DestinationStLeonards
This is a new project in the process of formulation by the St Leonards Tourism Group. The SLTG was born from the idea that the development of tourist activity would be an effective route to the regeneration of the town, and one that would benefit EVERYONE.
The group will be looking at the traditional aspects of seaside tourism, with a twist – but also at larger scale projects to develop St Leonards’ cultural infrastructure and the preservation of its heritage.
The Arts will be crucial because tourism is dependent on the quick impact of the sensory as well as the cultivation of emotional connection and the widening of perception. And we want it to be tourism with cultural quality and STYLE, that is generated by the character of the town, but that adds to it.
DestinationStLeonards is planned to be a web-based network of small and manageable projects at ground level with the opportunity for active participation available to anyone with ideas, time, talent and/or funds.
Anyone interested in membership or with the time and commitment to get more closely involved please contact Ellen Gray at ellenellengray@gmail.com.

The schedule for September is below.
All films listed below are in AF1 at 7 for 7.45.
Sun 5 Sep. “Skeletons”. “…….a superb surreal comedy that won ‘the best new British Film Feature at Edinburgh 2010.’
A pair of travelling salesmen wander in and out of people’s lives, performing a Procedure whereby hidden secrets and lies are exposed. When they arrive at a remote family home and can’t seem to get the job done, they discover that you can’t always get away from your own skeletons. One not to miss!
Thu 16 Sep. “London River”
In this new film from Rachid Bouchareb (Days of Glory), two parents (Brenda Blethyn and Sotigui Kouyate) from very different backgrounds search for their missing children in the immediate aftermath of the 2005 terrorist attacks on London. Despite initial differences and prejudices, the two grow closer as they discover how their children’s lives are entwined, whilst sharing an undying hope that they will find them alive.
Sun 19 Sep. “Isolation”. *** Q and A via Skype with directors***
The documentary follows local St Leonards-based photographer and ex-soldier, Stuart Griffiths, as he travels across England uncovering the personal and controversial stories behind the military statistics that 25% of British ex-soldiers sleep rough when they return home.
Described by Ken Loach as “an important document of the experiences of ex-soldiers told through the eyes of someone who knows,” Isolation is an impressionistic portrait of the emotional and physical aftermath of war.
Thu 30 Sep. “Four Lions”
This highly anticipated first feature from controversial British satirist Chris Morris (BRASSEYE, NATHAN BARLEY, THE DAY TODAY) follows four British Jihadi men and their bungled attempts at becoming terrorists. Like a new style of Ealing comedy (think Kind Hearts and Coronets) this film is provocative, moving and very, very funny.
MUSIC….
11 Sep @ 7.30 “Don Giovanni”. St Mary-in-the-castle. This staged production of Mozart’s Don Giovanni is adapted from the Longborough Festival production, which received great reviews in the national press. It promises value for money for opera aficionados. It is produced by Jenny Miller with young singers from the Music Colleges (ie to-morrow’s divas, stars, professionals). Very affordable at £12.00 (£8 student concessions ). Great to see young 20-somethings playing these roles.
