Stop Press…
AGM to go ahead in July. The Azur has been booked for our postponed AGM on Tuesday, 13 July at 6.30 for 7 p.m. We are confirming with nominees their intention of standing for election to the committee. The list of nominations for the committee and the agenda will be published in next week’s Bulletin.
Visit of the Mayor. The Forum was honoured with a visit by the newly elected Mayor, Councillor Kim Forward, on Wednesday 9 June. She saw the two current exhibitions — Katherine Reekie in AF1, and AF2 with Elaine Short and Robin Muckle. The Mayor also met several members who were handing in work for the Members Show.
The Mayor saw the Forum at its busiest and arguably at its best, as it worked under the pressure of resolving three separate exhibitions. In addition she saw an early glimpse of an exhibition in preparation, entitled “Pros and Cons” (featuring prisoners and prostitutes), which was co-incidentally being filmed for PR purposes.
Art on the Beach. We would like to draw members’ attention to a letter in last Friday’s Hastings Observer (4 June ) by a reader praising Katherine Reekie’s show “Art on the Beach” and contrasting the positive slant of her exhibition with the furore over the Jerwood application to build on the Stade.
The nub of the letter is in the last paragraphs as follows.
“ ……It’s a clear statement to Hastings. It says, ‘You haven’t really been thinking about 20th century art. You have just been having a planning argument (about the Jerwood). Here’s how to start thinking about whether you want some of it and if so, what you want.’
I think Katherine should get a big thank you (better still a grant) from Hastings planners, movers and shakers, for raising the level of the discussion about modern art in Hastings. “

Exhibition Calendar, 2011. Bids for the Forum exhibition calendar for 2011 opened on 1 Jun and the calendar is now filling up . Attached to this bulletin is an application form for an exhibition – you may submit your entry on this form and address bids to the “Arts Committee”. Mail or hand in at AF1 or email to info@hastingsartsforum.co.uk fao arts committee. Forms are also available at AF1.
Once your aspplication has been read by the arts committee, you may be invited to meet and discuss, together with original examples of work. If your application is agreed, you will be asked to pay an immediate non-refundable deposit of £50. You will also be asked to sign a binding artist’s agreement and asked to pay the balance of your gallery hire, two months prior to the date of your exhibition. A copy of the artist’s agreement is posted on the website – see www.hastingsartsforum.co.uk/get-involved/gallery-hire/
Shows for two weeks will be preferred over those for one week. One-week shows create a heavy burden for the all-volunteer hanging team. Where cost is a problem, we suggest sharing with other members whose work is compatible.
Poetry Group. The Poetry Group will next meet on Saturday, 10 July in AF2 (and not the first Saturday of July). Several members have expressed a wish to see the Wimbledon tennis finals on 3 July.
Film Club Q and A session. The SLOS Film Club has a Q and A session with David L Williams , Director of “Beyond the Pole” on 4 Jul.
