Marika, born into a Russian refugee family in post WW2 Germany (among the first intake of students at the Pestalozzi Centre, Seddlescombe), returns from Canada to Sussex to exhibit. She has a fascination with colour and form, right from the time she painted her doll at eight years old. She is versatile, but comments that people recognise her work by her colours. Marika has exhibited and sold widely in the USA (particularly Hawaii) and Canada.
Coming up…
John Hacker ARCA. in AF1 – pm.31 March –am.7 April
“Although my work appears abstract, I paint what I see. I Ching and the Book of Changes has been a starting point for me – the movement of light coming through dark, and dark through light which is especially apparent on the mono gallery and to a certain extent on the colour gallery pages shown on mywebsite www.johnhackerartist.com and Forum members gallery.
Furthermore, what also is of great interest to me is the balance and imbalance of these light patterns and different energies which change throughout the seasons, and how this affects colour – from the winter months when the light is at its lowest to mid summer when intensity reaches its peak.”

“My work portrays deeply felt feelings and emotions. From these senses and understanding arise the dramatic power of the mark. I am able to capture an image that is spontaneous with immense direction and movement. Therefore I would like to feel I have created honest pieces of work.

Rossetti Commemoration. Forum members are taking part in a Rossetti commemoration at St Clement’s Church on 21 May. Gabriel Dante Rossetti (1828 – 1882) was a founder member of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood in 1848. In 1860 he married Lizzie Siddal in St Clements and it is the 150th anniversary of his marriage, which is being commemorated.
Amongst Forum members, taking part, Bruce Williams is showing six new large religious oil paintings (6ft x 5ft) and the Forum Poetry Group is reading poems. Rosetti came from an artisitic family, which included his sister, Christina. Lizzie Siddal was also a poet and when she died, Rosetti buried his poems alongside – though he later recovered them.
