About me
I live and work in Hastings, East Sussex, where I have a studio overlooking the Old Town and sea. I work primarily in oil and have always been interested in the interior as a subject.
My paintings are exploring movement expressed by light. There is an element of the theatrical, the pose and props all play a part, the movement of the subject is important as is the highlighting with colour. Although I start out with a clear idea of the subject I am not interested in reproducing an interior scene, it is more about capturing something random, the flick of fabric, the sparkle of reflected light from objects, the glint of mirrors or glass.
I prefer to work from photographs which are taken in an arbitrary way, moving around the space and subject trying to strip away and simplify forms down to reveal the elusive quality of light, structure and atmosphere of the environment.
There is a dialogue between the aesthetic quality and the deeper significance, the poignant reminders of the transient nature of life and passage of time, a momentary merging of vision and psyche.
