About me
Marije Rowling – Biography
I was born into a lively, artistic environment.
Creating Art and bringing it into everyday life have been two of my main interests.
I studied drawing, painting and history of art at the Academy of Art and Design in Eindhoven, during a time of great upheavals in the art world.
Pop art, with all its variants, was starting to replace Abstract Expressionism.
Form and Concept were starting to be the essence of creating, with Concept striving for dominance.
I taught all this, but was not happy with it.
I missed the soul quality, which painting had in such abundance.
Then I studied for three years at Emerson College and Tobias School of Art, where I found the love for colour I had been looking for.
From 1985 to 2001 I was Head of Upper School Art at the Canterbury Steiner School.
During that time I illustrated children’s books.
From 2002 to 2009 I taught painting, the Steiner Painting curriculum and History of Art at Emerson College and Tobias School of Art and Therapy.
Since 2009 I am solely concentrating on my own work.
I have had regular exhibitions, group as well as solo ones, of my work since 2002.
These included the series paintings of the Zodiac, Colour Expressions of Seasonal Impressions, and Nature Moods in Landscapes. Lately my work has returned to my old favourite: Abstract Expressionism.
