About me

Ian Francis MA

I have recently moved back to Hastings, a return to childhood haunts. My parents originally came from the area and I spent many holidays with relatives from the town. I have taken the move as an opportunity to concentrate on my painting and drawing, having worked in the past in jobs as wide ranging as; chef, milkman, white Van man, and policeman.

I have painted in various genres, from abstraction through figuratism and narrative works. The latest work takes me back to abstraction which contains elements of figurative notation, hints at anatomical illustration and natural elements seen through a lively imagination.

For both myself and the viewer this work is about an imaginary journey through the act of creating, whether on the page or in the mind. The journey is not linear but goes in waves and circles, repeats and grows, reflecting the sense of movement of living by the coast, light bouncing off the sea, clouds, ships on the horizon, sails, trees in the wind, everything is moving.
