Mary Dawson.. Puppet making

Rosie Harness.  hat making using recyclable materials

St Valentine week exhibition. This week-long show is by the final year students at Sussex Coast College and it forms part of their course work. Known as  ‘Professional Practice’, the aim is to give students practice in exhibiting. The exhibition is preceded by a half-day visit to the Forum , where members of the Forum ‘team’ give a presentation on how to mount an exhibition and how to present work for public display. This visit took place on Wednesday 19 Jan and Steve Stanton led the presentation. 42 students attended and, hopefully, all will be exhibiting in February.

Members Shows. The dates for the Members Shows, 2011 are as below.

There will be two one-week shows divided alphabetically as follows.

Week 1.  17 – 22 Feb for those with surnames beginning A – L.

Week 2.  24 Feb – 1 Mar. Surnames  M – Z.

Every member is entitled to submit one entry.

Jill (and Jack)-in-the-Green 28 April – 3 May. This is another Members’ show. Again, each member is allowed one image, which is suitable for the May Day bank holiday week-end. ‘Jack’ is traditionally associated with Hastings and we were encouraged to receive the support of the ‘Jack’ organisers last  year, who were equally pleased to see St Leonards being more engaged in the festival.

With three months to go, we would encourage members to think ahead and come up with some really innovative and good entries.  Themes may be May Day,

‘Rites of Spring’, Jack-in-the-Green, Jill-in-the-green, motor bikes, Morris dancers, but you may think of other suitable themes. We would love to see the Forum respond with some really new innovative images -  and don’t leave it to the last minute.

Current Exhibition…

15 – 25 Jan in AF1 and AF2. Re-Cycling Exhibition, curated by Annie Rae.

Hastings Arts Forum proudly announces it will hold its first recycling exhibition in its two galleries, 13 – 25 January 2011. The exhibition is curated by Annie Rae, and will include work by 15 of the Forum’s artists.

Annie Rae hopes this exhibition is only the first of a series, exploring imaginative methods needed to re-use materials, which are usually destroyed, dumped or put into landfills. The exhibition has work that is ingenious and  witty.

The Hastings and Bexhill Wood Recycling Project is playing a major role, providing recycled wood for displaying exhibits and examples of its furniture and designs. Stewart Walton’s original prototype drawings will also be included. Wood comes into many of the contributions, as do other discarded materials. Serena Thirkell uses  discarded metal. Penny Hobson beachcombs and with an eye for colour, arranges objects in several clever ways. Max Lane uses many found and discarded bits and pieces to make small, clever sculptures.

Tim Riddihough, Peter Quinell and Peter Edwards are well known for bringing a smile to those attending Forum exhibitions. Artists working in mixed media include Kim and Renee Thrower, Harry Snook, Danny Mooney, Martin O’Neill, Cathryn Kemp, Maika Crampton.

**** Extraordinary Meeting. An EGM  will be held on Sat 8 Jan to ratify the committee’s decision to recommend to the membership a change of status for the Forum. This means the Forum will change from being an unincorporated organisation into a Charity. This is an unanimous committee decision for the reasons elaborated on in the special notice sent out to members by email and sent out by post to members without email.

The Forum is now stable and we must look to our future, which the committee believes is best secured by becoming a charity. It is important that we have a good turn-out for the meeting on 8 Jan as we need to illustrate that this is a ‘membership’ decision with wide ranging support.

Call for “Auction” donations. The Forum is holding its annual auction in support of  Funds on Sat 5 Feb 11 at 2.30. An exhibition of items for sale will be on display from 27 Jan – 5 Feb. With five months to go, we would encourage members to think ahead and come up with some really innovative and good entries.  Themes may be May Day, ‘Rites of Spring’, Jack-in-the-Green, Jill-in-the-green, motor bikes, Morris dancers, but you may think of other suitable themes. We would love to see the Forum respond with some really new innovative images -  and don’t leave it to the last minute.

Forthcoming Exhibitions…

3 – 11 Jan .AF1 and AF2. Both galleries are closed for Re-furbishment.

13 – 25 Jan in AF1 and AF2. Re-Cycling Exhibition, curated by Annie Rae.

Hastings Arts Forum proudly announces it will hold its first recycling exhibition in its two galleries, 13 – 25 January 2011. The exhibition will be curated by Annie Rae, and will include work by 15 of the Forum’s artists. Dress up in your recycled best for the private view.

Annie Rae hopes this exhibition is only the first of a series, exploring imaginative methods needed to re-use materials, which are usually destroyed, dumped or put into landfills. The exhibition has work that is ingenious and often witty.

The Hastings and Bexhill Wood Recycling Project is playing a major role, providing recycled wood for displaying exhibits and examples of its furniture and designs. Stewart Walton’s original prototype drawings will also be included. Wood comes into many of the contributions, as do other discarded materials. Iain Johnson and Serena Thirkell use discarded metal.

Artists working in mixed media include Kim and Renee Thrower, Danny Mooney, Martin O’Neill and Bernard Hoffman. The private view is Friday, 14 January at 6.30. Dress up!!

“Frugal Food”. Marina Post Office tearooms, our neighbours and Forum members, have agreed to organize the food for the preview on 14 Jan of the Recycled 1 exhibition. Obviously, we cant call it “Recycled” food, but  think of how to use left-overs, homegrown food, unwanted cuts, wild food, unwanted parts of the local fish catch, and foraged food and you will get the general idea.

Food is suitable for fingers. The menu for the evening is :–

Bunny burgers on homemade rolls (Philips Dad mills flour) and homemade pickled cucumbers

Goujons of dab and home made tomato ketchup

Lentil kebabs

Wild mushroom risotto balls

Yesterday’s bread bruschetta

Crisps (just past the sell-by date ) and homemade pickles

Sloe vodka trifle

Bread pudding

Cherry brandy jelly

Wear your recycled best !!!

Relax and Recycling. Our neighbours in Relax, also Forum members, are offering a special menu for late night eating to members attending  Recycling 1 preview. There will be various choices @ £5.50 including a bowl of nourishing vegetable soup with crusty bread at £5.50 and a special dish of the day.

Also congratulations to Relax as it celebrates two years on the St Leonards seaside strip on Thursday, 13 Jan.

27 Jan – 5 Feb. in AF1 and AF2. ****Auction in support of Forum funds****.

The Auction will take place on Sat 5 Feb at 2.30. The Exhibition is open from 25 Jan until 2pm Sat 5 Feb. We are now open for members’ donations as from Wednesday 19 January. The exhibition of donations will go up on Wednesday 26 Jan.

9 – 16 Feb. My Happy Valentine ; My Bloody Valentine”. This is now an annual event when students from Sussex Coast College give their views on the St Valentine’s Day tradition. The show forms part of the students’ professional practice, which is part of the degree course. It is also welcomed by  members, who enjoy seeing a predominantly young group exhibiting across all the various media, which go to make up modern art.

Members Shows are an opportunity for ALL members of the Forum to exhibit, whatever their expertise. Selina Di Girolamo. Sorry there hasn’t been an update for a while. I know everyone is desperate to know how Selina is doing.

As the medical profession is unable to do anything to help Selina get well, we are using a range of alternative health practices to give Selina support and healing.

Selina worked with healer Tjitze de Jong for a few days last week and continues to have several other alternative treatments such as cranial osteopathy, acupuncture, body work and herbalist remedies as well as following a highly nutritious organic diet (designed by a nutritionist) specifically aimed at giving her the strength and nourishment she needs during this critical time.

We have uncovered many stories of people written off by the medical profession who have healed themselves and these stories give us all strength and determination. I spent some time with an amazing lady who has survived  an inoperable brain tumour for over 10 years now! She put us in touch with various people and healing methods which have been a great help.

Selina is sleeping most of the time now, very deeply and has very little pain. A SCIO biofeedback scan shows that despite the stress her brain is under, her body shows great internal strength and vitality so we feel the therapies we are using are at the very least nourishing her body and keeping her comfortable.

Selina isn’t able to use a phone or laptop, or even look at the Facebook page right now, though rest assured we are telling her how much support there is for her and how much everyone is praying for her return to health, so she knows how much you all care. If anyone would like to send Selina a message or letter, please email them to me and either Mike or I will read them out to her.

Please, please continue to pray and send your healing thoughts out to Selina every day at 9am. The strength these prayers give to Selina and to the whole family is amazing.

Thank you again for all your support.

Prologue to Romeo and Juliet.   Two households, both alike in dignity,
In fair Verona, where we lay our scene,
From ancient grudge break to new mutiny,
Where civil blood makes civil hands unclean.
From forth the fatal loins of these two foes
A pair of star-cross’d lovers take their life;
Whose misadventured piteous overthrows
Do with their death bury their parents’ strife.
The fearful passage of their death-mark’d love,
And the continuance of their parents’ rage,
Which, but their children’s end, nought could remove,
is now the two hours’ traffic of our stage;
The which if you with patient ears attend,

What   here shall miss, our toil shall strive to mend

The Members Shows along with Jack(Jill)-in the-green are your two opportunities in the year. We encourage all members to lodge an entry.
