**** Extraordinary Meeting. An EGM  will be held on Sat 8 Jan to ratify the committee’s decision to recommend to the membership a change of status for the Forum. This means the Forum will change from being an unincorporated organisation into a Charity. This is an unanimous committee decision for the reasons elaborated on in the special notice sent out to members by email and sent out by post to members without email.

The Forum is now stable and we must look to our future, which the committee believes is best secured by becoming a charity. It is important that we have a good turn-out for the meeting on 8 Jan as we need to illustrate that this is a ‘membership’ decision with wide ranging support.

Call for “Auction” donations. The Forum is holding its annual auction in support of  Funds on Sat 5 Feb 11 at 2.30. An exhibition of items for sale will be on display from 27 Jan – 5 Feb. With five months to go, we would encourage members to think ahead and come up with some really innovative and good entries.  Themes may be May Day, ‘Rites of Spring’, Jack-in-the-Green, Jill-in-the-green, motor bikes, Morris dancers, but you may think of other suitable themes. We would love to see the Forum respond with some really new innovative images -  and don’t leave it to the last minute.

 FILM…

St Leonards Film Society.

Thu, 23 Dec. AGM @ 7pm. Final film of  2010 @7.30 for 7.45. -  LE DINER DE CONS (15).  Synopsis. “ Each week, Pierre Brochand (Thierry L’hermitte) and his friends host a weekly idiots dinner (un dîner de cons). Each friend must bring along the most idiotic person that he can find as a guest without them suspecting the real reason for the invite. Pierre thinks that he has found the star of the show in François Pignon (Jaques Velleret). Laughs a-plenty in this hilarious French comedy!

Thurs, Jan 6th  @ 7 for 7.30. THE ILLUSIONIST (PG). “…The Illusionist is one of a dying breed of stage entertainers. With emerging rock stars stealing his thunder, he is forced to accept increasingly obscure assignments in fringe theatres, at garden parties and in bars and cafes. However, while performing in a village pub off the west coast of Scotland, he encounters Alice, an innocent young girl, who will change his life forever…”

POETRY…

The Poetry Group will meet in the Forum on Saturday 8 Jan 11. The focus will be on the sonnet. If you wish to know more, you could do worse than google “sonnet” and look at the Wikipedia site.  Rose Miller, MPhil, who currently hosts the Buchanan reading group, will give a short informal presentation on the sonnet.  A classic example is the Prologue to Romeo and Juliet  by Shakespeare.

Prologue to Romeo and Juliet.

Two households, both alike in dignity,
In fair Verona, where we lay our scene,
From ancient grudge break to new mutiny,
Where civil blood makes civil hands unclean.
From forth the fatal loins of these two foes
A pair of star-cross’d lovers take their life;
Whose misadventured piteous overthrows
Do with their death bury their parents’ strife.
The fearful passage of their death-mark’d love,
And the continuance of their parents’ rage,
Which, but their children’s end, nought could remove,
is now the two hours’ traffic of our stage;
The which if you with patient ears attend,

What here shall miss, our toil shall strive to mend

Re-cycling Exhibition. Preparations for the Forum’s first re-cycling exhibition are now well advanced. It is hoped that this will be the first of a series. Re-cycling 1 will go up on Wed 12 Jan, with the private view on Fri 14 Jan.  See separate  announcement below under “Coming up”.

****Extraordinary Meeting.

Thisis a call to members to look out some pieces to donate to the Forum for auctioning. All monies to go to the Forum.

Discount for Forum members. (On  production of a Forum membership card.)

Brookers, Norman Rd  on bills of £10.

Kings Stationers, Kings Rd.  on bills of £10.

Post Office Tearooms. 10% on menu items (not specials )

Members Shows. The dates for the Members Shows, 2011 are now published. There will be two one-week shows divided alphabetically as follows.

Week 1.  17 – 22 Feb for those with surnames beginning A – L.

Week 2.  24 Feb – 1 Mar. Surnames  M – Z.

Every member is entitled to submit one entry.

Jill (and Jack)-in-the-Green 28 April – 3 May. This is another Members’ show. Again, each member is allowed one image, which is suitable for the May Day bank holiday week-end. ‘Jack’ is traditionally associated with Hastings and we were encouraged to receive the support of the ‘Jack’ organisers last  year, who were pleased to see St Leonards being more engaged in the festival.

Poetry Group. The Forum’s poetry group had a good attendance  for a wintry cold day on 6 Dec. We had 12 members attending, to read and discuss haiku verse. Encouragingly we had three new and young members. One member from Seaford, John Davies, was unable to attend but sent in several  tetrains of haiku verse, which were read out.

The next meeting of the group will be on Saturday, 8 Jan in the Forum at 4 pm. It was decided to concentrate on the 14-line sonnet.

Showing Now…

2 – 14 Dec in AF1. Hasting Society of Artists (HSA), curated by Anna Pontonutti.

The Hastings Society of Artists is an informal collective of Hastings and St Leonards based artists that get together periodically, to show their work, discuss ‘art’ and exchange ideas. This Christmas exhibition includes recent work by seven painters and print makers.

Hazel Brook, Jonathan Goddard, Jill Hartman, Ray McChrystal , Anna Pontonutti, David Reeve, Tim Riddihough.

2 Dec – 2 Jan 2011 in AF2.  Creative Christmas  Fair 2010“   curated by Angela Childs.   Affordable Christmas presents for and by artists. Includes trees from Hastings and Bexhill Wood Recycling Project (HBWR ). The project has a policy

HBWR is selling Christmas trees through the Forum’s Christmas Fair. Stewart Walton firmly believes we must save wood from landfill sites – these trees are made from wooden pallets -  beautiful and useful !!  Three sizes on sale at £25 / £50 / £95. Orders taken on full payment.

of using jobseekers. This is a Hastings success story and HBWRP is now noticed on a national and international level. Iain Johnson and Serena Thirkell are other exhibitors, who are conscious of the intelligent re-use of discarded metal. Iain is producing wall clocks at £12.50 and Serena has a wide selection under £100.  Patricia Neve is displaying her artistic textiles at affordable prices. Sandra Kelvie exhibits fine beadwork with prices from £12.50 for spectacle chains to £85 for necklaces. New Forum member Kate Crook exhibits seriously good etchings from £200 (unframed) and origami etching jewel boxes at £275.

The foregoing is what immediately springs to mind from an initial glance and written before all exhibitors had placed their wares. A full list will appear next week. The standard of exhibition is something to make the Forum proud.

Coming up…

3 – 11 Jan .AF1 and AF2. Both galleries are closed for Re-furbishment. Volunteers required. Please call in or telephone the Forum on 201636

13 – 25 Jan in AF1 and AF2. Re-Cycling Exhibition, curated by Annie Rae.

Hastings Arts Forum proudly announces it will hold its first recycling exhibition in its two galleries, 13 – 25 January 2011. The exhibition will be curated by Annie Rae, and will include work by 15 of the Forum’s artists.

Annie Rae hopes this exhibition is only the first of a series, exploring imaginative methods needed to re-use materials, which are usually destroyed, dumped or put into landfills. The exhibition has work that is always ingenious and often witty.

The Hastings and Bexhill Wood Recycling Project is playing a major role, providing recycled wood for displaying exhibits and examples of its furniture and designs. Stewart Walton’s original prototype drawings will also be included. Wood comes into many of the contributions, as do other discarded materials. Iain Johnson and Serena Thirkell use discarded metal. Penny Hobson beachcombs and with an eye for colour, arranges objects in several clever ways. Max Lane uses many found and discarded bits and pieces to make small, clever sculptures.

Tim Riddihough, Peter Quinell and Peter Edwards are well known for bringing a smile to those attending Forum exhibitions. Artists working in mixed media include Kim and Renee Thrower, Danny Mooney and Martin O’Neill .

The private view is Friday, 14 January at 6.30.

27 Jan – 5 Feb. in AF1 and AF2. ****Auction in support of Forum funds****.

The Auction will take place on Sat 5 Feb at 2.30. The Exhibition is open from 25 Jan until 2pm Sat 5 Feb. We need members’ donations .

Members Shows are an opportunity for ALL members of the Forum to exhibit, whatever their expertise. You may want in self-confidence; you may want to test the market; you may not be able to afford an exhibition; you may have no reason at all. The Members Shows along with Jack(Jill)-in the-green are your two opportunities in the year. We encourage all members to lodge an entry.

Louise Kenward posts – an opportunity to see the artist at work
At the new SoCo (South Coast artists) End of Year Show at St Mary-in-the-Castle, Hastings, you will get a chance to see an artist at work. She is on an inner journey, whilst making it at the same time public. Louise’s work is always reflective, she responds to the environment around her. At St Mary-in-the-Castle, Hastings, she inhabits one of the alcoves in the crypt, an enclosed quiet space. In this she has placed a small wardrobe from the 1930s, her grandmothers, who died a few years ago. Wardrobes are evocative, our childhood fantasies of worlds beyond, mystery, darkness and memories. She explores the transience of changes in light, sound and shadows, things there yet not there. Louise will photograph and record her activities, giving the viewer the opportunity to become aware of her process and the development of the space. Louise will be there most Saturday afternoons during the duration of the show.
