Re-cycling Exhibition. Preparations for the Forum’s first re-cycling exhibition are now well advanxced. It is hoped that this will be the first of a series. Re-cycling 1 will go up on Wed 12 Jan, with the private view on Fri 14 Jan.  See separate  announcement below under “Coming up”.

****Extraordinary Meeting. An EGM  will be held on Sat 8 Jan to ratify the committee’s decision to recommend to the membership a change of status for the Forum. This means the Forum will change from being an unincorporated organisation into a Charity. This is an unanimous committee decision for the reasons elaborated on in the special notice sent out to members by email and now being sent out by post  to members without email.

The Forum is now stable and we must look to our future, which the committee believes is best secured by becoming a charity. It is important that we have a good turn-out for the meeting on 8 Jan as we need to illustrate that this is a ‘membership’ decision with wide ranging support.

Call for “Auction”  donations. The Forum is holding its annual auction in support of  Funds on Sat 5 Feb 11 at 2.30. An exhibition of items for sale will be on display from 27 Jan – 5 Feb. With five months to go, we would encourage members to think ahead and come up with some really innovative and good entries.  Themes may be May Day, ‘Rites of Spring’, Jack-in-the-Green, Jill-in-the-green, motor bikes, Morris dancers, but you may think of other suitable themes. We would love to see the Forum respond with some really new innovative images -  and don’t leave it to the last minute.

Poetry Group. In order to encourage new members and new ideas the Poetry Group is to focus on Haiku verse at its December meeting. One standard form of haiku verse is the three liner  – using 5 x syllables followed by seven and finally five syllables. Members of the group were asked to compose  some original verse in this haiku format to read at the next meeting at  4 pm on  Sat 4 Dec.

13 – 25 Jan in AF1 and AF2. Re-Cycling Exhibition, curated by Annie Rae.

Hastings Arts Forum proudly announces it will hold its first recycling exhibition in its two galleries, 13 – 25 January 2011. The exhibition will be curated by Annie Rae, and will include work by 15 of the Forum’s artists.

Annie Rae hopes this exhibition is only the first of a series, exploring imaginative methods needed to re-use materials, which are usually destroyed, dumped or put into landfills. The exhibition has work that is always ingenious and often witty.

The Hastings and Bexhill Wood Recycling Project* is playing a major role, providing recycled wood for displaying exhibits and examples of its furniture and designs. Stewart Walton’s original prototype drawings will also be included. Wood comes into many of the contributions, as do other discarded materials. Iain Johnson and Serena Thirkell use discarded metal. Penny Hobson beachcombs and with an eye for colour, arranges objects in several clever ways. Max Lane uses many found and discarded bits and pieces to make small, clever sculptures.

Tim Riddihough, Peter Quinell and Peter Edwards are well known for bringing a smile to those attending Forum exhibitions. Artists working in mixed media include Kim and Renee Thrower, Danny Mooney, Martin O’Neill and John Lipsham.

The private view is Friday, 14 January at 6.30.

*The Hastings and Bexhill Wood Recycling Project has hit the headlines recently with a commission to supply Christmas trees from recycled  wooden pallets to prestigious outlets in London (Conran) and New York. Louise Kenward posts – an opportunity to see the artist at work
At the new SoCo (South Coast artists) End of Year Show at St Mary-in-the-Castle, Hastings, you will get a chance to see an artist at work. She is on an inner journey, whilst making it at the same time public. Louise’s work is always reflective, she responds to the environment around her. At St Mary-in-the-Castle, Hastings, she inhabits one of the alcoves in the crypt, an enclosed quiet space. In this she has placed a small wardrobe from the 1930s, her grandmothers, who died a few years ago. Wardrobes are evocative, our childhood fantasies of worlds beyond, mystery, darkness and memories. She explores the transience of changes in light, sound and shadows, things there yet not there. Louise will photograph and record her activities, giving the viewer the opportunity to become aware of her process and the development of the space. Louise will be there most Saturday afternoons during the duration of the show.

This show also provides exciting art from the increasing stable of international, London based and local artists. Including Carley Ralph, Jean Davey Winter, Judy Dewsbury, Roger Blaker, and Brian Rybolt, also included are new members from the London Group, Eugene Palmer and Kathleen Mullaniff.  Poetry Group. The Forum poetry group met in AF2 on Saturday, 6 Nov. Ten members attended, including four new members. Several pieces of original verse by members was read.

The group discussed the future and  it was agreed to carry on as before, meeting at 4 pm on the first Saturday of the month. The possibility of venues elsewhere was raised, but the consensus was that the Forum should be the standard meeting place – with the agreement of  exhibiting artists.

It was also thought that there are some would-be members of the Forum who might join the poetry group, if  given encouragement and confidence in their reading skills.  In this regard, a gentle introduction to composing and reading verse is the haiku form of verse – and to this end it was decided to focus on this form for the next meeting.

One standard form of haiku verse is the three liner  – using 5 x syllables followed by seven and finally five syllables. Members of the group were asked to compose  some original verse in this haiku format to read at the next meeting on Sat 4 Dec.

Exhibition calendar change. The exhibitions for the remainder of November have been re-scheduled. “Invisible” is remaining in AF2 for a further week until Tuesday evening 16 Nov and “Splash” is being brought forward a week – though the private view for “Splash” remains as Fri 26 Nov. Our thanks to both groups for adjusting at short notice, but particularly “Splash”, which has had to rush its work forward by a week.

Poetry Group. The Forum poetry group met in AF2 on Saturday, 6 Nov. Ten members attended, including four new members. Several pieces of original verse written by members was read.

Members of the group discussed the future and  it was agreed to carry on as before, meeting at 4 pm on the first Saturday of the month. The possibility of venues elsewhere was raised, but the consensus was that the Forum should be the standard meeting place – with the agreement of  exhibiting artists.

It was also thought that there are some would-be members of the Forum who might join the poetry group, if  given encouragement and confidence in their reading skills.  A gentle introduction to composing and reading verse is the haiku form of verse – and to this end, it was decided to focus on this form for the next meeting.

One standard form of haiku verse is the three liner  – using 5 x syllables followed by seven and finally five syllables. Members of the group were asked to compose  and read some original verse in this haiku format for the next meeting on Sat 4 Dec.

Debi experiments with the camera as well as painting landscapes from life.

Private View: Friday November 19th 6:30 – 8:30

‘Drawing with the Lens Series’

She uses the camera to distort still life studies into abstract images. On studying these soft landscapes, one can recreate a distant place and imaginary horizon.

The small oil paintings are ‘Still Lifes for the Kitchen’
Her sketch books dates back from the mid 70’s… originally early 60’s but they all got thrown away when her Gran moved.
