Congratulations to all three photographers exhibiting in AF1, Quinn Collins, Sam Margerison, Fiona Mersh. Following their preview last night in AF2,  they have been invited to place their exhibit  Invisible in the Toilet Gallery in London. Invisible is curated by Andy Moran. Andy together with Alex Bratell, deserve much recognition for promoting photography at Sussex Coast College and for their efforts in promoting the culture of photography in Hastings generally. It is shows such as Invisible that reflect their efforts in nurturing these talented three students.

Danny Pockets. Danny Pockets is exhibiting in the Circle Gallery at Sussex Coast College , 8 November -  3 December. Danny won the Sussex Coast College art prize earlier this year and his show is entitled “Arcadia”.

Arcadia is a project about Hastings pier, which was on-going long before its destruction earlier this month. Danny recognises that the recent fire will affect viewers’ perception but maintains that Arcadia is homage to the pier and is not a requiem.

Calling all Photographers!!! We have been mail-shotted by Matt Roberts Arts with details of a national Photo competition offering a £1,000 prize and a solo exhibition in East London. The closing date for applications is Sat 4 Dec. A summary of the mailshot is below after ‘Film’ news.

The Forum Poetry Group meets on Sat 6 November at 4 pm in AF1. On 20 Oct several members  attended the Poetry Group, which meets in ‘The Rooms’ , to read verse and exchange ideas withits members. It was agreed that the Group needs to strengthen by attracting new and younger members.  Constant changes of venue may also help to maintain interest. These will be raised at the the forthcoming meeting on 6 Nov.

Sharon Moore has sent us a link to view her entry into the Hastings Film Challenge 2010 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sK9v9Jvmaos&feature=email

International Children’s Day.  Mary Dawson is promoting a fun day at St Mary-in-the-Castle for children on Saturday 20 November to mark International Children’s Day. See her notice below. Please note that the day is Sat 20 – as some publicity has quoted an incorrect date.

“Conversation en Français.”  The first afternoon of ‘Conversation en Français ‘  took place on Thursday 28 Oct . A modest but enthusiastic number attended and was enjoyed. Michel Guille is available on Thursday afternoons, 2-5, in AF1 or 2 to anyone who wishes to converse in French, however good or terrible.  Michel (not pictured) is a native French

speaker and those who know him, find him très compatissant. See the notice under Mambers’ announcements.

Mavra Bryony makes a ‘last’ appeal to anyone who may have information about a coronet of roses she wore to Penny Nice’s private view, and which featured in one of Penny’s paintings. Mavra last saw her coronet when she accepted a lift home from a fellow guest, ‘Pipi’ or ‘Pipistrelle’,and may live in the Wadhurst area. Does anyone know Pipistrelle? If so, leave a message at the Forum for Mavra.  The coronet has sentimental value.

Cathryn Kemp. Cathryn’s  work has been selected as Saatchi Gallery’s Online Critic’s Choice.

“ (It is) unabashedly personal. She relies heavily on the psychological landscapes of her life to create abstract images that combine delicacy of touch with stable composition. The connection between abstraction and self-expression is a well-worn topos in the history of art, but in the best cases this relationship is based on a solid understanding of medium and technique to build an original emotional vocabulary and develop visual scope.

Kemp achieves this through a striking combination of materials. In her most recent series I Will Never Forget You (2010) she has created an image diary recording her “profound and revelatory” experiences in rehab. The digitally created pieces have been printed onto hand-milled German etching paper which give the physical properties of the works a solidity and longevity belied by the transitory violence emotions conveyed.

The drama of Kemp’s interior world unfolds before us revealing a deep well source of emotional intensity and an affecting internal landscape that traces aspects of time, memory, and history. But like many of the best abstract artists the more significant impact lies in the experience of viewing: It is difficult at times to further enter into her private thoughts since Kemp’s evident feel for texture, form, and contrast ensures that the viewer is never too far distracted from the concrete beauty of her work.”

It is over 9 m (30 ft) long X 5 m (16 ft)wide with a separate office on top. It also has a VERY large storage space in attic under the roof – a truly atmospheric and inspiring space, with high ceiling, storage areas along the edges of these roof shapes. And 3 very light, long windows – one is length of the room and white wall space on the other length. Also there is a raised area four meters long at the end of the room creating a stage-like atmosphere, separated by long curtains for performances. It looks like a theatre. Wooden floors throughout, working sink, first floor with a very wide stairwell, private parking  and toilets in courtyard and very nice fellow users in the yard. Rent is £210 per month. Use at late night or Sunday is not permitted so I am looking for a similar space with more flexible hours in Hastings area,  in, or near, country park/nature. I cannot  use the studio any longer, because of commitments in London, If you have something suitable and would like a swap, or know somewhere, please contact me at jesuisart@gmail.com or phone number 077 99 413 435

Showing Now…

Catherine Litton in AF2, 23 Sep – 5 Oct

Catherine Litton has lived her whole life on the coast and feels a deep connection to the sea and the landscape…..

……..For me my work is not about what I have painted, but rather what happens while I paint. I listen to the paintings and allow the work to find it’s own way. It’s instinctive.

The colours and the movement of the medium capture and narrate that which cannot be depicted in words.  Thus allowing the work to be viewed and understood on an individual and emotional level.

David Drey in AF1. 30 Sep – 12 Oct

“What is a Subject?”       Some paintings by David Drey.

“……The question “What is a Subject?” really is a very alive one for me while making the paintings; what can be a subject, what is the subject?…and so on.

My aim beyond this process is to arrive at a series of images that work on the senses in a visceral way, which are surprising and unexpected, as unexpected as something seen immediately and with complete freshness.”

Forum at the Azur (AF3). Paintings by Jeremy Ebdon, Brij Sharma and Chris Thomas

Coming up…

“Washed up”  Penny Hobson in AF2. 7 – 12 Oct.

Washed Up – Artist statement

Ever a collector – from triangular cheese labels and pencil sharpeners in my youth, to snow globes and Devon Blue jugs today – it is to the beach I have turned since returning to Bexhill fifteen years ago.

The ever-changing sea and the beach give me solace and beachcombing has become an obsession: stones, driftwood – but most particularly the strange and wonderful coloured objects cast up onto the beach.  These I organise, order, notate – in a world in which I otherwise have no control. The flotsam and jetsam is lessening its hold – but I cannot imagine leaving a beached cigarette lighter to its fate, or that abandoned toy – they simply have to come and join my growing collection…

‘Flare’ : Penny Nice in AF 1, 14 – 26 Oct.

Artist Statement: Penny Nice :  ‘Flare’ My passion for, and long time involvement with, the local shoreline often provides starting points for watercolour and pastel paintings.

This exhibition has been an opportunity to combine coastal influences with a celebration of the life of my Uncle, Ronald Ewens, who was a lighthouse keeper for Trinity House for thirty five years and served on many of the lighthouses around the British coast, including Dungeness and Beachy Head. Safety at sea, the local work of the RNLI, the unique nature of the lighthouse keeper’s job, together with the variability of weather conditions is explored through the work.

The maritime environment, vibrant colours and a personal connection with the subject are my inspiration. I attempt to give authentic insight to my subject through spontaneous use of paint and pastel.

This is my second exhibition at the Arts Forum, following a joint exhibition last Summer.

Partners in Stitch ( June Barnes and Tricia Neve ) in AF2 14 – 26 Oct

Lin Gregory & Louise Kenward.  2 October -14 November at Café One, 1 London Road, St Leonard’s on Sea.

Two local photographers with two very diverse subjects will be showing their work at Café One in St Leonard’s as part of the Brighton Photo Fringe – Hastings festival in October and November.

Lin Gregory’s The Memory of Trees explores the sacredness of trees, long recognized as a symbol of life and regeneration and, to some, of mystical knowledge and space.  The images shown look at the form, function, texture, spirit and environment of trees as well as the memorials and prayers that are created around them, evidence of the affinity many people have with them as sacred spaces.

Louise Kenward’s Waiting for the Bus is a gallery show running parallel to images installed in bus shelters around St Leonard’s and Hastings.  Interested in what was once there, the transient is made more permanent, albeit temporarily.  She is interested in drawing attention to those unnoticed, but familiar places, and eliciting the viewer to re-look at them – questioning reality and perception.

Both exhibitions are part of the On The Map group show, an exciting mix of exhibitions and photographic installations that create a photo trail around St Leonard’s on Sea.  Work can be seen at venues stretching from the sea front and follow a downloadable map that sees the trail winding its way up to Warrior Square station.

FILM…

St Leonards Film Society.

The schedule for October is below. The theme this month – Black History. See also   http://www.stleonardsfilmsoc.co.uk/programme.htm . All films listed below are in AF1. Doors open at 7 for 7.45.

Thu 14 Oct. “Good Hair”  When Chris Rock’s daughter, Lola, came up to him crying and asked, “Daddy, how come I don’t have good hair?” the bewildered comic committed himself to search the ends of the earth and the depths of black culture to find out who had put that question into his little girl’s head! Director Jeff Stilson’s camera followed the funnyman, and the result is Good Hair, a wonderfully insightful and entertaining, yet remarkably serious, documentary about African American hair culture.

Thu 28 Oct. “From a Whisper”.  Winner of the best film at the African Movie Academy Awards 2009. Story based on the 1998 bombing of US Embassy in Nairobi. Tamani devotes much of his life to looking for her mother, who disappeared that day ten years ago.
