Coming up…
Clive Gross in AF1, 29 Jul – 10 Aug. “The Empty Empire – Landscapes from a Bankrupt Nation” Artist’s statement is attached to this bulletin.
“This new show covers a range of work taken in locations around the UK in then ten years since I moved out of London and down to the Sussex Coast.
From faded seaside resorts that have been allowed to crumble into the sea; Cities that have had their industrial heart replaced by retail parks; Disused docks over-run with identical apartment blocks; and every town centre seemingly built from the same plan, this collection aims to look behind the façade of the economic boom we have been told we have just lived through and provide a snapshot of where we are as we begin to pay the bill for it.
By looking at the choices we have made about what has been kept, what destroyed and what built in its place, this exhibition is not only about opportunities lost, but the possibility to do things differently if we take back control of our own environments.” Clive Gross

Members’ Announcements…
Nick Weekes posts :
Thismachine is a musical group that doesn’t care to fit in with the industrialised ideology of music making. They are performing a large scale improvisation in AF1 on Saturday 24th July as part of a season of performances called “A – Series”
“A-series time has no planned framework ; thismachine is exploring impromptu sound as art and will be improvising works for 5-6 hours per exhibition: other than that, no predetermined musical forms, modes or other rules apply.”
The “A-series” refers to the work of JME McTaggart “The Unreality of Time” that sets out to demonstrate that time is an illusion. Further info on the internet : en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Unreality_of_Time
What to expect? Three musicians nestled in separate corners of the gallery (possibly)out of sight of each other improvising and reflecting in the gallery space as it floats through time.

Nancy Cooley posts. Calling all parents!!!! A new creative music course for children kicks off with a summer holiday course this August in the Reading Room, 12 Claremont in Hastings town centre.
Running from August 16th to 20th, ‘Magical Music Mornings’ is a week- long course full of singing, stories, movement, listening and instruments. There’s an hour each morning for 6-7yrs and for 8-9yrs in groups of between 12 and 15 children, and the sessions are designed imaginatively to encourage children to be creative and playful with music.
In September ongoing classes begin which will running throughout the year in term-time for the same age children, every Wednesday after school. And there are introductory workshops on two Wednesdays mornings, August 11th and September 1st.
The courses are led by Nancy Cooley, local musician, an experienced classical performer, choir and workshop-leader and teacher.
