Clive Gross in AF1, 29 Jul – 10 Aug.  “The Empty Empire – Landscapes from a Bankrupt Nation” Artist’s statement is attached to this bulletin.

“This new show covers a range of work taken in locations around the UK in then ten years since I moved out of London and down to the Sussex Coast.

From faded seaside resorts that have been allowed to crumble into the sea; Cities that have had their industrial heart replaced by retail parks; Disused docks over-run with identical apartment blocks; and every town centre seemingly built from the same plan, this collection aims to look behind the façade of the economic boom we have been told we have just lived through and provide a snapshot of where we are as we begin to pay the bill for it.

By looking at the choices we have made about what has been kept, what destroyed and what built in its place, this exhibition is not only about opportunities lost, but the possibility to do things differently if we take back control of our own environments.” Clive Gross

“This new show covers a range of work taken in locations around the UK in then ten years since I moved out of London and down to the Sussex Coast.

Santiago Alcon in AF2 , 29 Jul – 10 Aug.

Santiago  Alcon was born in Jerez, Spain and is now living in London.

Santiago studied art in Spain for two years, but says his training was biased towards the ‘traditional’ and classical life drawing. On the conclusion of his course, Santiago visited his sister in Edinburgh, an event  which was to have a profound effect on him. “ I was impressed by the range and diversity of art in the city – it was an awakening for me. I immediately set about enrolling in Edinburgh College of Art.

“Another profound experience for me was my introduction to violence. I was with a group of friends visiting the gay quarter of Edinburgh, when we were set upon by a gang of skinheads, causing serious injury to my friends. This aroused deep anger in me and it affected the quality of my painting, I found myself using strong colours and the emotions aroused by the attack showed up in the intensity of my brush strokes.

“Colour remains very important to me, whether it is the intense blue of the sky in Spain or whether it is the subtlety of the English  skies. However, I am now concentrating more on portraits.”

Santiago’s next exhibition is “Art for Youth” in October in London.

Forum at the Azur (AF3).  Brij Sharma, Chris Thomas, Jeremy Ebdon, John Plummer and Katherine Reekie. Also  see Mike Williams wood sculpture on the terrace balcony, made from mahogany, beech and oak inspired by William Blake’s “falling forms”.

Coming up…

Heather Hookey in AF1. 12 – 17 Aug.

A long time ago I was a librarian, then a hotelier, then a civil servant. When I retired I joyfully studied Fine Art at Hastings College of Art and Technology, completing the Foundation course followed by HNC and HND. I get fairly obsessive about painting and drawing but also enjoy sporadic gardening.

Taster, Coastal Currents in AF, 19–31 Aug. Curated by Geraldine Wheeler.

 Joan  Roche in AF2, 12 – 24 Aug.

Joan Roche is a painter based in St Leonards-on-Sea. She  came to London from Dublin in 1965 to study Fine Art and received her MA in 1978 from the Royal Academy Schools.

She maintained strong connections with the Schools’ alumni whilst combining her art practise with a career as senior lecturer in Fine Art between 1990 and 2010. This relationship with the Academy is sustained through attending weekly drawing sessions in the famed circular studio, an engagement deeply influencing her development.

Working within the tradition of landscape painting, Joan works in a studio on the sea front in Marine Court, the apartment block above this gallery. The view from this ‘ocean liner’ charts the continuous flux of the sea’s surface; a vast plane of energy. The atmospherics complement a long-standing fascination with hydro-optics and natural light. Predominantly working in oil based media experimenting with brush, montage and print techniques, she draws directly from the environment that the town of St Leonard’s overlooks.

She has shown work in a number of exhibitions in the U.K. and internationally including the R.A Summer Shows, the Centro Modigliana Florence and Poly Nation in New Delhi. Other awards include the Landseer Landscape Prize and the Royal Overseas League where she was presented to Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II. She is represented in notable collections worldwide in the Middle East, Australia and California.

Whither the Forum? AF1 Sunday, 25 Jul at 5 pm

Posted 8:00 pm July 24, 2010

Sid Beynon will chair a group discussion on “what sort of Forum “ do we, the members, want. This is a continuation of the discussion we had at the Forum’s AGM and was warmly received by those attending as a constructive discussion.

There are many options open to us ranging from being a Sunday afternoon painting club through to a hub of excellence in the South East. Everyone is eligible to exhibit in the Forum’s two galleries through the medium of Members’ shows and similar. Also the Forum gives a platform to group shows, such as the current Zoom show in AF2, which is a group of nine painters from Sussex Coast College. Some are exhibiting for the first time and this gives a certain amount of confidence to new exhibitors.

In AF2, there is a solo show from an artist who has exhibited many times before. Next week there will be a solo exhibition from a Spanish artist and also a photographic exploration of a theme (urban redevelopment). These solo shows are the result of the Arts Committee believing there is merit in the solo shows – but this leads us on to the concept of “selection”, which is not welcomed by all members. This is something which should be thrashed out by members, as it will affect the future profile of the Forum. It follows that if there is an element of selection, we should get a consensus of what factors should be included. It is to be hoped that  the four shows over the next few weeks will be somewhat inspirational and give food for thought, ie, educational, Maybe you find this attitude patronising or even better,  you may have other ideas that ought to be considered.  Lets hear from you !!

Sun, 18 Jul -  ‘Erasing David’ (12A) UK 2010 + Q&A with director, David Bond and Phil Booth (NO2ID). Synopsis below.

Once the bastion of freedom and civil liberties, the UK is now one of the most advanced surveillance societies in the world – ranked third after Russia and China. The average UK adult is now registered on over 700 databases and is caught daily on one of the 4 million CCTV cameras located on nearly every street corner in the country. Increasingly monitored, citizens are being turned into suspects. But if you’ve got nothing to hide, surely there’s nothing to fear?

When David receives a letter informing him that his daughter is among 25 million residents whose details have been lost by the government’s Child Benefit Office, he begins a journey that will see him hounded across Europe.
