Dates for your diary…

4 Jun. Open studios.  South East Open Studios runs from Friday 4 – Sun 20 Jun. Check opening times against the SEOS catalogue (available in AF1). Several Forum members are taking part and prepared to welcome you into their studios. See members’ announcements below.

Stop Press…

Exhibition Calendar, 2011. Bids for the Forum exhibition calendar for 2011 will open on Tuesday 1 Jun . Attached to this bulletin is an application form for an exhibition – please submit your entry on this form and address bids to the “Arts Committee”. Mail or hand in at AF1 or email to info@hastingsartsforum.co.uk  fao arts committee.

The arts committee may invite you to meet and discuss, together with original examples of your work. If your application is agreed, you will be asked to pay an immediate non-refundable deposit of £50. If your application is agreed, you will be asked to sign a binding artist’s agreement and asked to pay the balance of your gallery hire, three months prior to the date of your exhibition. A copy of the artists agreement is posted on the website – see www.hastingsartsforum.co.uk/get-involved/gallery-hire/

Shows for two weeks will be preferred over those for one week. One-week shows create a heavy burden for the all-volunteer hanging team. Where cost is a problem, we suggest sharing with others whose work is compatible.

Azur and the Forum. There is a rumour circulating that several members of the Forum intended to boycott the recently scheduled AGM in the Azur due to another rumour that the Azur had hosted a meeting of the BNP.  The Azur absolutely denies any truth to this rumour and is dismayed at the possible damage to its business. Rumour also has it that someone confused “BNP” with the “BNI” ( Business Network International ) which does meet at the Azur.

Members Show. Images of work are invited from exhibiting members to help with publicity for the members show,

Poetry Group will next meet on Sat 5 Jun at the earlier time of 4 pm in AF2. Original poems are welcome, but also feel free to bring along some of your favourites.

The group took part in the recent concert to commemorate the marriage of Rossetti to Siddall and received warm applause for an original humourous poem written and spoken by Michael Short.

Project Art Works. The recent exhibition with Project Art Works was regarded as a resounding success. Some £4500 was taken in sales of art work and supporting literature.

Members’ Show.

Coming up…

Elaine Short and Robin Muckle in AF2, 2 – 9 Jun.

Artist Satement – Robin Muckle

After spending my working life in the field of IT, I retired early and decided to pursue my fascination with art.

My interest is predominantly in three-dimensional work, experimenting with different media – mainly clay, plaster and sometimes stone.

The work is mainly figurative, often attempting to blend realism with expression. Inspiration comes from nature and the human form, as well as past and contemporary artists.

I enjoy the contrast between moulding and carving and the process through to the final finish which may be ‘raw’, one of a variety of cold or patinated finishes, or glazed using one of the many different techniques such as raku.

Kim Thrower is exhibiting his paintings on the theme of cupcakes in ONE Sandwich Bar at 1, London Road, St Leonards. The show runs until the end of May. ONE opened in  late Autumn, 2009 and has been a welcome addition to the the regeneration of central St Leonards. The Forum supplies ONE  with a changing exhibition each month, mainly on the theme of colour and abstraction. This exhibition is a change to the theme, but is eminently suitable for a sandwich bar and tea-shop.

 Postponed AGM

The committee regrets to announce the postponement of the scheduled AGM. This is due to the receipt of  a judgment against us by Worthing County Court in respect of a claim by Southern Water relating to our licence to occupy 17, Marine Court (the former Baird TVF ) in 2008. We are contesting the judgment and we believe that our case is strong.

In view of the above, it was the unanimous decision of those present that we could not ask a new committee to take on the undefined risks associated with the judgment.

The delay will hopefully not be more than two months. We hope to address administrative procedures so that these circumstances can not be repeated.

Finally, we would take this opportunity to reassure members that Forum finances are in good shape and able to deal with any foreseen circumstances.

Project Art Works, until 25 May

This show has received lots of compliments.. PAW has mentored six artists with learning difficulties and complex needs over 18 months. The six artists are John Croft, Albert Gere,Neville Jermyn, Michelle Roberts, Jonathan Rogers and Charlotte Stephens. The artists  have been given the opportunity to work intensively in an artist studio environment under the careful mentoring of Tony Colley. The results of this unique period of professional development are extraordinary and are displayed as six very distinct bodies of work. As an example of the care and detail of the mentoring, PAW has built a scale model of  both AF1 and 2 with scale models of the exhibits in their planned location s on the walls.

An illustrated catalogue of the exhibition has been produced and is on sale at £5.00.

It mainly features local subjects but has a definitely cosmopolitan feel to it thanks to the talents of the photographers and the wide range of influences and inspirations that has emerged during the course. Many of these projects will go on to be seen elsewhere in expanded form, notably at Hastings’ first photography festival this Autumn, so this is a chance to get a first look at work by artists we will be seeing much more of in the future”.

Her designs range from pictorial landscapes and seascapes to abstract and decorative patterns derived from nature. She has been particualarly inspired by the landscape and coastline of southern England, but believes that practically any subject or idea can be represented in woven art. Her materials consist of high-quality rug wool, linen and cotton warps, acrylic and other artificial and natural fibres, some of which are hand-dyed to produce colours not readily available from commercial sources. Her work has been shown in various group exhibitions, including the regional and national exhibitions of the Association of Weavers, Spinners & Dyers, at Avebury, Lacock, Devizes, Wells, Bath, Oxford, Kendall and York, and she has also has solo exhibitions in Bradford-on-Avon and Rye. She now lives and works in St Leonards, where her studio has a wide view of the sea from which she derives so much inspiration.

Rosetti – Siddall commemoration

150 years ago on May 23rd 1860 the Pre Raphaelite artists Dante Gabriel Rossetti married his lover and model Lizzie Siddal in St. Clements Church Hastings. Lizzie later became a fine artist and poet in her own right. Sadly just two years later she died. To commemorate the wedding there will be an exhibition by local artists in St Clements Church from 10.00am until 4.00pm daily from Sunday 23rd – Monday 31st May. Exhibiting artists include Ron Nicola, Jane Marriner, Mike Williams, Alan Wright, Simon Hookey, Bruce Williams and Beth Boorman. Exhibits include paintings, stained glass, photography and wood carving. Local children will also exhibit. The works of art already in the church will also be on display including the brasses (which are usually covered) and the Sanctuary Light given to commemorate the wedding. On the evening of Saturday May 22nd there will be a concert of song and prose inspired by the Pre Raphaelites given by Susannah Appleyard and members of the Hastings Arts Forum poetry group. On Sunday May 23rd there will be a sung evensong at 7.00pm to commemorate the anniversary itself. Sitters are also needed to look after the exhibition so we can keep it open all week. Contact Keith Leech on 01424 716576 or bogiekeef@tiscali.co.uk

Harry Snook is examining the feasibility of an exchange exhibition between the Forum and a Brazilian colleague in Rio de Janeiro. Because of transport expenses, work would necessarily be small and easy to pack.

As a first step Harry would like to form a working party of mixed skills to bring this project to fruition. The projected date is as soon as possible, but not before Autumn 2010.  Please contact Harry Snook if you can help. It is hoped the Forum will be able to host a reciprocal exhibition from Brazil in return.

Project Art Workshop (PAW) in AF1 and AF2, 12 – 26 May. This promises to be a really interesting show. PAW has mentored six artists with  learning difficulties and complex needs over 18 months. The six artists have been given the opportunity to work intensively in an artist studio environment under the careful mentoring of Tony Colley. The results of this unique period of professional development are extraordinary and are displayed as six very distinct bodies of work. As an example of the care and detail of the mentoring, PAW has built a scale model of  both AF1 and 2 with scale models of the exhibits in their planned location s on the walls.

For further info on PAW see  http://www.projectartworks.org/index.htm

Katherine Reekie in AF1 26 May – 9 Jun. Artist Statement.

Many artists have drawn inspiration from the seashore. With the impending arrival of the Jerwood Gallery to the Stade in Hastings, the beach will not only be a subject matter for artists but also a venue for art.

Local artist Katherine Reekie has produced a series of surreal images in response to the concept of art physically being on the beach.

This new collection of work depicts the imagined visit to the Stade by recognisable characters from the world’s great art collections. The likes of Bruegel’s hunters wearily return across the shingle, whilst Toulouse Lautrec’s Parisians loiter around a promenade shelter. Katherine has created a strange world where the imagined inhabits the real, emphasising the fine line between the two.

Lesley Crabtree  posts… Aardvark
As the old adage has it, a change is as good as a rest and with this in mind we are planning a major change for Aardvark. From June onwards we will no longer be a tearoom, but the shop space will be available to let for art/craft/design shows, pop-up cafés, talks, workshops, film nights, music nights and general DIY community happenings. We want to enhance the creative atmosphere of St.Leonards by enabling individuals and groups to rent a space for short term projects. There will be a Coastal Currents/Open Studios event, and a Christmas Show. Other than those two things we are open to applications (details to follow soon), so do pop in over the next few weeks to catch up with us, have a cuppa and pitch your ideas for the new Aardvark. We’re very excited about the future, and looking forward to seeing all the friends we’ve made over the past two years on a more social level! Let’s make 2010/11 the Year of DIY in St.Leonards.

To commemorate the wedding there will be an exhibition by local artists in St Clements Church from 10.00am until 4.00pm daily from Saturday 22nd-Monday 31st May.
