Coming up…

John Hacker ARCA.  in AF1 – pm.31 March –am.7 April

“Although my work appears abstract, I paint what I see. I Ching and the Book of Changes has been a starting point for me – the movement of light coming through dark, and dark through light which is especially apparent on the mono gallery and to a certain extent on the colour gallery pages shown on mywebsite www.johnhackerartist.com and Forum members gallery.

Furthermore, what also is of great interest to me is the balance and imbalance of these light patterns and different energies which change throughout the seasons, and how this affects colour – from the winter months when the light is at its lowest to mid summer when intensity reaches its peak.”

   ARTIST STATEMENT – PAUL CASTLE

I suffer with a bi-polar disorder. I have felt the need to make this statement in the hope that the viewer can see more deeply into how I function as an artist.

My work portrays my deeply felt feelings and emotions. From these senses and understanding the dramatic power of the mark, I am able to create a spontaneous image that has tremendous movement and direction. These gestures, I would like to feel, make an impact resulting in an honest body of work.

The majority of my work is untitled. The reason for this is that it is important to me that viewers decide on their own interpretation of my work – therefore feeling their own personal sensations.

An annual general meeting is mandatory.

Firstly, we need to approve the accounts for the period, Jan – Dec 2009. Accounts for this period are now finalised and have been submitted for

independent audit . (Our last AGM in October 2009 covered the period 2006 -2008, due to exceptional circumstances.)

Secondly, Forum members are required to appoint and/or re-appoint members to the committee. All positions on the committee become vacant.

Thirdly, it is an opportunity for members to suggest changes to the constitution – Anyone wishing to make changes must submit their proposal three weeks in advance of the AGM, ie 4 May. It should be proposed and seconded.

The AGM will be held in the Azur (downstairs) and will begin at 6.30pm. A quorum of ten per cent of the membership is necessary, so please put the date in your diaries.  Membership is currently fluctuating between 450 and 550 members.

Please also start thinking about whether you or another member might stand for the committee, or one of the officer posts (Chair, Secretary or Treasurer), as many of the current group would like to take a “breather” after what  has been a difficult fifteen months. Proposals for election to the committee should have the candidate’s prior consent. Meetings are currently held monthly, but some degree of commitment is expected.

Committee Minutes and Volunteers

We have a need for those with special skills, such as book-keeping , IT,  fund-raising and anyone who feels that they might be able to take on a small project, eg,  updating the buyers’ list, the membership lists (this post becomes vacant shortly). The list is not exclusive – you may see something else that you could suggest. Please see whether you can help in this respect, much of which could possibly be done from home with a laptop and ‘stick’. IT IS YOUR FORUM !!

Juliette Dodd is running a one-day workshop, Sat 27 March. She is providing a female ballet dancer and will offer tuition in the style of Degas. See members’ posts below.

Inspired by previous charity sales of art that have been organised for the Tsunami and Pakistan earthquake disasters, a group of local artists and residents decided to run a similar event for Haiti. We are calling for donations of artworks, craft pieces and ‘promises’ from local businesses. The majority of these will be sold for a £50 set fee. Some will be auctioned by our celebrity MC — Steve Furst (aka Lenny Beige).

 Matters arising

Yvonne noted that the letter of appreciation to Sid Beynon for his contribution  to  HAF over four years was outstanding. .

Leaflets: Steve in theory could produce in-house leaflets but had little time. It was suggested we ask Erica Smith to help produce quarterly leaflet.

Angela said new volunteer, Kate Cosgrove, could possibly take over membership when Francesca gives up.

Rosie volunteered to do a publicity run when distributing her own leaflets.

Finance

Alice reported approx £3000 in bank. Harry pointed out we need to generate more sales.

There followed a detailed discussion of out of pocket expenses for volunteers.

It was agreed to have a budget limit of £1500 per annum and mileage to be paid at 30p a mile for travel within a radius of 5 – 25 miles of the Forum, where need was illustrated.

Procedures

Complaints procedure and form was agreed

Pat pointed out that a Code of Behaviour was required  i.e no abusive behaviour/drunkenness; no alcohol at board meetings; discretion when discussing artists work within hearing of public. Yvonne to circulate bullet points for discussion.

To be put in Bulletin: Volunteer skills needed.

Pros and cons of being a charity to be researched.

Exhibitions Committee

This is  now down to one member: Wendy. Wendy has recruited Dorothy Huntrods. Annie Rae and Geraldine willing to serve, also Ray  to be asked to join. This was agreed and It was suggested that membership of this committee be rotated.

Hanging system HAF2: £450 spent. System to be installed on East Wall by George and Steven two weeks’ time. To be extended on end wall with the aid of battens to support wall.

Ray has offered to give  a presentation on how to present work for exhibition.

The ‘hanging team’ made the point that on the artists’ agreement, which they sign, artists agree to submit work in a suitable condition eg not wet, and suitably framed etc. Hanging team reserves the right to veto work not suitable for hanging.

Grant application:

Peter Andow was introduced and spoke about his experience in fundraising and applying for grants. The Board is delighted that Peter is  prepared to work on a Tudor Trust application for us. He pointed out what would be required, mission statement, surveys etc. Surveys  could be undertaken by the Forum. We need to identify where there are  gaps in local provision for minority groups..

Board to contact Peter by May to give him the go ahead and instruct him  which areas we would like to concentrate on for application.

Peter suggested SAGE system would be very helpful in producing data and keeping it, this would reduce workload in the long run however Pat offered another accounting programme (Workbook) at a discounted price which committee voted to accept.

Website

Alan Privett spoke of his idea for “Artlink” for music events. Michael Short also spoke about expanding HAF website to be a communications hub/portal.

HAF would need a disclaimer to say HAF not responsible for content. Nick would have to update it. He spoke about improvements he was about to make to the website, e.g adding blog facility for members.

Nick also suggested we could take ads on the website to generate income, this to be discussed by putting in bulletin. He was asked could the list of members be surname first and Nick said there was a way of accessing the list that way. Website could carry comments/ reviews.

HVA has offered to give presentation on volunteer co-ordinating. HVA officer  ‘Rose’ to be contacted.

AGM proposed for  Tuesday, 25 May at Azur 7 PM.

Next committee meeting Tuesday 30 March 5.15
