Committee Minutes from Tuesday, 2 February
Summary of committee Meeting, 02 02 10
This was a well attended meeting as it was Rod Harman’s last meeting before his departure.
Steve Stanton was welcomed to the committee as a co-opted member. Rod made particular mention of Steve’s brilliant hanging of the show in HAF 2.
Christmas Show
This took almost £5000. Congratulations to Angela for her curatorship and to all involved in making it such a success. John and Alice had put in long hours to ensure that all 36 artists were paid for the Christmas show.
Finance
John and Alice reported that £17000 debt which has been hanging over HAF has at last been cleared and the Bank account is in the black. This is a tremendous achievement in the teeth of the recession and a testament to the careful husbandry of the finance team.
AF 2
Wendy put in a plea for £500 from the Auction to be earmarked for a new hanging system for AF 2 to enable large and heavy work to be shown. This was agreed.
Secretary
Yvonne announced her resignation as secretary as she is travelling abroad this year. She has worked tirelessly in this role for which the Board is most grateful and passed a vote of thanks. She has drafted a list of tasks for which volunteers are invited to sign up for. A replacement Secretary must be in post before the AGM.
Group membership
A £75 joining fee has been agreed with a hire fee of £200 per week. Group membership is intended for “worthy” causes, such as Mencap, and schools. It is intended initially to restrict the scope to two schools and two socially useful causes.
The meeting ended with glasses raised to Rod whose contribution to HAF has been so inspiring and the cutting of a special cake in his honour.
Call for Volunteers….
It is time for a renewal of energy and commitment to the running of Hastings Arts Forum.
We are looking for persons with administrative ability and time to commit.
Having succeeded in clearing all debts during the last 15 months we now need to consolidate our systems in order to prepare for fund raising and possible charitable status.
If you have previous experience in office administration, the Charity Commission (benefits/disadvantages), the Arts Council and fund applications AND have time, then please get in touch as soon as possible.
We have over 100 individual tasks ranging from housekeeping to maintaining the buyers’ list to data entry for artists’ sales. If you can re-cycle fur us on a Saturday morning or clean the windows at any time then your expertise will be gratefully received.
Please call in to discuss at the forum, ring us (201636) or email us info@hastingsartsforum.co.uk

Coming up…
“Six Print Makers at the Arts Forum”, 24 Feb – 2 Mar in AF1.
Six local printmakers who met at Hastings College of Art exhibit for a week beginning 24 February combine to explore the use of vibrant colours and forms using screenprint and monoprint. They explore across a range of themes including urban imagery, film noir and architecture.
Phil Cosham. Phil has equal passion for both printmaking and ceramics. He has work relating to film, film noir and ‘the excitement of the city’
Mary Morris is an artist and printmaker based in Mayfield. “Coming from a fine art and textiles background, I find monoprint an exciting and intuitive way to work” she says. “These thread studies relate to their connection between memory and place.”
George Mundell continues to experiment with silk screen prints of urban America, but inevitably returns to his first love, colourful monoprinting of beautiful French and Oriental actors.
Del Querns contributes a collection of screen prints inspired by urban Americana.
Derek Treacher specialises in monoprinting and silkscreen methods. His work is inspired by and based on his own original photographs and drawings.
Geoff Dendle takes original digital images and uses traditional silkscreen methods to produce limited edition prints. Present inspirations include Sussex modernist buildings and traditional stone houses on Crete.
Pat Watts 17 – 24 Feb in AF1. Pat, a new member, uses mixed media such as watercolour, acrylic, oil pastels, coloured inks and collages on paper. She likes to play creatively with images which emerge from least conscious parts of the mind. She is also attracted to colour and movement.
Chris Thomas, 17 Feb – 2 Mar in AF2. Photographs with a section featuring acrylics.
Jack Ambridge, Mark Fisher and Clio Pinkney, in AF 1. 3 – 16 Mar.
Details to follow.
“Kaleidoscope” Steve Stanton, Harry Snook, Bob White and Ruth Wurzburger in AF2. 3 – 16 Mar. This group is “going” abstract with emphasis on colour. Steve is showing photographs. Harry will be exhibiting some amazing and colourful prints; Bob exhibits models of birds( mainly seagulls) and Ruth colourful assemblages.
Marika Moore in AF1, 17 -30 Mar. Marika is a Canadian member of the Forum, but is no stranger to Sussex. Born to refugee parents in Germany at the end of World War 2, she lived in Switzerland until she was 12, when she was accepted along with her brother, Yogi, by the Pestalozzi children’s village in Seddlescombe. On leaving Pestalozzi in 1964, Marika studied graphic art for two years in Hastings after which she emigrated to Canada. In 1979 she turned again to art, this time to study Fine art at Kelowna, Canada.
Marika has had a fascination with colour and form, right from the time she painted her doll at eight years old. She believes herself to be versatile, but comments that people recognise her work by her colours. Marika has exhibited widely in the USA and Canada.
Kim Thrower and friends in AF2, 17 – 30 Mar. Statement to follow.
