Rod Harman.
There was a good response to the collection for Rod Harman and £221.54 was collected. Following a conversation between John Cole (photographer) and Rod, a folio of photographs was taken and bound and two extra pages were added at the end for members to add messages. The folio was presented to Rod at the private view on 22 Jan. After photographic expenses, £121.54 was handed to Rod to spend on water colour paper of his own choosing.

South East Open Studios “Taster” Exhibition, 5-12 May in AF1 and AF2.
Alice Maylam, who is curating the taster exhibition for the South East Open Studios programme, reports that not all applicants for a place in the “taster” exhibition, 5 -12 May, are signed up for the official SEOS programme. The number of participating SEOS members – 15 – justifies one gallery space.
However, Alice is sounding opinion on whether a “taster” exhibition in the second gallery, might serve a need for members of the Forum who may be considering opening their studios to the public at any time during the summer. The estimated cost would be £15 per entry and we would need about 15 takers (we already have ten) – but a speedy decision is required – by Tuesday 5 Feb. If interested contact alice@alicemaylam.co.uk

Gap in our Exhibition Calendar.
We have filled the gaps in AF1 for our 2010 calendar.
We have one remaining gap in AF2 we need to fill as follows.
23 – 29 Jun

Gallery hire costs are £150 per week. £50 per booking is payable immediately and the balance, three months before the exhibition date. We also expect you to host a private view on the first Friday of your show. A simple “wine and nibbles” hospitality costs from £60 upwards.
We welcome group applications, where members may wish to share the cost, or where a member can not fill the space adequately. In this case, we like one member to take on the booking and be responsible for co-ordinating the group.
Members should apply to the Exhibitions committee, with examples of the work of each member exhibiting. info@hastingsartsforum.co.uk and marked FAO Wendy.

Remember our auction on Saturday, 6 February at 3p.m. Donations requested.

South East Open Studios “Taster”  Exhibition, 5-12 May in AF1 and AF2. (Note.  May not June  as in our earlier notice)

Below is a copy of the notice we sent out earlier this week (please note that the month of the “taster” is May and not June as given out earlier), Alice reports a great response and already has 24 takers. This is sufficient to go ahead and confirm the booking for two galleries. Alice will still take a few more entries, but will close the entry list on Monday 25 Jan.

Alice Maylam is co-ordinating this exhibition. This exhibition gives one central point, which allows artists participating in the Open Studios programme to exhibit. Last year, we had a very good response using one gallery only. 15 artists took part at a cost of  £15 per head and the feedback from artists was positive. This year Alice is hoping to run two galleries, but needs a quick response from those wishing to take part as deposit and payment for the “taster”. exhibition are due and there is a waiting list for this space. Please get in touch with Alice as soon as possible at, preferably, alice@alicemaylam.co.uk or info@hastingsartsforum and mark your email FAO Alice.”

Cards, browser and jewellery sales in the Forum

Sales of postcards, greetings cards, prints and jewellry continue to provide a valuable source of income for the Forum. At the moment we have rather more cards than we can display, so for the time being we ask artists to hold on to their stock until we have more display space, or as and when we ask for more stock. Goods such as cards, etc have been accepted and offered for sale on an informal basis so far. It is anticipated these arrangements will soon be put onto a formal basis, similar to the agreements for hiring exhibition space. This will provide certainty for the artist and the Forum, and enable stock control to be monitored accurately.

Reggie Osborn – an appreciation.

The team behind the desk at AF1 would ike to express its appreciation to Reggie Osborn for his significant contribution to the development of the Forum website over the last three months.  Reggie has now returned to the USA after an unexpected and prolonged  stay in Hastings.  He gave a considerable amount of time to developing the Members’ Gallery and helping members produce their gallery entry and to producing Blogs. Haiti Appeal.

A suggestion has been made by a Forum member to the committee that we extend our auction for 6 Feb to a larger venue and share the proceeds with the emergency appeal for funds for Haiti. This proposal has been circulated to the committee but the general belief is that this is not a workable proposition. There are complications also in that the Forum is not, as yet, a registered charity, whereas the Haiti Appeal would be eligible for immediate charitable status.

It is thought that Haiti and the Forum are two separate issues. We recommend that members moved by the TV images respond to the appeals privately and, of course, also give support to Hastings –based fundraising. If a group of members wish to raise funds, the Forum will be happy to circulate details of their appeal to members.

Gaps in our Exhibition 2010 Calendar.

We have filled the gaps in AF1 for our 2010 calendar.

We have received a group bid for the cancelled exhibition, 3 – 17 March in AF2. We still have two gaps in AF2 we need to fill as follows.

23 – 29 Jun

Cost – £150 per week per gallery. £100, per booking, is payable immediately (this is a recent amendment applicable to all new applications – due to late cancellations ) and the balance is due three months before the exhibition date. We also expect you to host a private view on the first Friday of your show. Our guideline is that a simple “wine and nibbles” hospitality costs from £60 upwards (6 x bottles red wine, 5 x white in winter and 4x red and 7 x white / rosé in summer plus a selection of water / soft drinks/ juice).

We welcome group applications, where members may wish to share the cost, or where a member can not fill the space adequately. In this case, we like one member to take on the booking and be responsible for co-ordinating the group.

Committee Meeting – 5 Jan 09 in AF1….

We are including, for members’  information, a  summary of our monthly Board meetings  from now on. The Board met last on 5th January.

Finance

The Board was delighted with the response to the Christmas Show which was a useful financial contribution at a low time of the year. Many thanks to Angela Childs and her team for their hard work.

John Plummer, asistant treasurer, was pleased to announce the payment of the last standing orders to clear the back debts.  This means from now on HAF can concentrate on covering its running costs. This is a huge achievement.

Exhibitions

The Calendar is virtually full for 2010. Existing gaps are published on the Bulletin.

AF2

There was some discussion about how to make AF2 more attractive. Ideas include putting a paypoint/telephone extension there, installing a new hanging system to enable us to hang larger works. ? sponsorship for this.

A working party has been set up to cost these improvements.

Logo

New designs for this have been invited. The old one was criticised for being dated and it was felt something new and dynamic would be more appropriate.

Group membership

Several requests for group membership have been received. Criteria for this need to be established. A working party has been set up to look into subscription/criteria etc and will report back to the next meeting.

3 day closure

Yvonne had a long list of tasks which members of the Board were invited to help with during the closure period 7-9 Jan.

The poetry Group is diverse and seems to be going from strength to strength . Please note the 2 pm start to allow out-of-towners to travel home before dark. We will offer tea and biscuits. Donations to the Forum are welcome.

2010 Season

John Fletcher in AF1.   20 Jan – 2 Feb 2010. PV 22 Jan at 6.30

John will exhibit his photographs of the Hastings Fishing sheds. Emphasis on unusual angles and the wooden textures of the sheds. Artists statement to follow.

Rod Harman and Geoff Parham in AF 2.   20 Jan – 2 Feb. PV 22 Jan.

Rod and Geoff have a long friendship going back over the  years at Hastings College. This is Rod’s farewell to Hastings. See the members’ gallery on the website www.hastingsartsforum.co.uk

Forum Auction 3 – 9 Feb 09. This is a fundraiser for the Forum, where the Forum begs / borrows/ steals contributions from members to auction in aid of Forum funds. Whereas the Forum manages to survive (just) on gallery hire, commission and membership dues, there is a need for extra funding to enable the Forum to invest in equipment and provide help for members who need it. This is the one occasion in the year, when the Forum gets to keep all the money from a sale. So, we hope you will think ahead and donate an item for the sale.

South Coast College Professional Practice, 10 – 17 Feb in AF1 and AF2. This exhibition is across St Valentine’s Day and has hitherto been subtitled “My Valentine, my bloody Valentine” Young students both in and out of love exhibit around the theme of happy and unhappy Valentine encounters. We don’t know how this will turn out until the day but Sid tells me that he is always lifted when working on this show and the feedback from the young students is rewarding.

Happy New Year. May 2010 bring you all you wish for.
