Artist Statement: Penny Nice, subtitled ‘Flare’
My passion for, and long time involvement with, the local shoreline often provides starting points for watercolour and pastel paintings.
This exhibition has been an opportunity to combine coastal influences with a celebration of the life of my Uncle, Ronald Ewens, who was a lighthouse keeper for Trinity House for thirty five years and served on many of the lighthouses around the British coast, including Dungeness and Beachy Head. Safety at sea, the local work of the RNLI, the unique nature of the lighthouse keeper’s job, together with the variability of weather conditions is explored through the work. (more…)
The exhibition consists of paintings and photographs made in the last two years. Most include an element of portraiture and several are of members and visitors to the Arts Forum who allowed me to photograph them during my last exhibition in January 2008. I used these to develop a simplified painted portrait style concentrating on the psychological impact of the sitter. This was in part inspired by Alice Neel, whose work I first became aware in the 1970s, towards the end of her life.

In 2000, A. Lincoln Taber and Danny Pockets prepared to enter the third millennium and recognised what an amazing occasion it would be to pass through the portals of time into the year 2000…
They realised they had to mark the occasion with something truly monumental, something very human, something that had the possibility to transcend the constraints of time itself….. AT & DP decided to document the event and passed into the new age by making an itinerary of the contents of their pockets within a regular time frame. (more…)
Cathryn is an award-winning painter, based in Sussex. She completed her Masters Degree in Fine Art at Winchester School of Art’s prestigious Barcelona studios and won a London Arts Board award for her body of work completed at the Moscow Institute of Architecture and Art.
She has exhibited in Moscow, Barcelona, Belgium, London and the South East and is represented by Saffron Gallery in Battle, East Sussex. She is exhibiting in the Brighton Art Fair and her first solo show takes place at the Hastings Art Forum, 16-30 September. (more…)
